Stuck in Lower Math Course?

Hi CC,

I tested out into Precalculus in my placement test for my CC (Pasadena) and was wondering how I could get moved up into Calculus. I talked to someone over the phone in the counseling office and they said that there was NO way to be moved up, the departments don't tend to move up kids from a lower level. Granted I took AP Calc AB in hs they said HS transcripts don't matter.

What can I do to get into Calculus at CC? Should I just meet with a counselor anyway?

you can ask your math dept director if he can move you up (but its a stretch)

i was in the same situation as you. sadly im taking precalc this coming quarter. waste of time imo :(

Im going to retake my assessment tests

Gotta study this weekend

any advice on the Calculus portion?

Retake the assessment.

If you don’t place into the class you want to be in, but would still like to try to take that class, take your assessment score and your HS transcript with your grade on it, and your AP exam result and go meet IN PERSON with your advisor.

If that doesn’t work, repeat step 3 IN PERSON with the head of the math department.

If that doesn’t work, ace pre-calc this term. The 4.0 will look good on your transcript.

When it comes time to advocate for yourself, nothing beats doing it IN PERSON, and then getting the approvals IN WRITING. Do not try to get this kind of stuff done over the telephone or by email.

if your school is like mine then you can’t retake the assessment for like a year, take it at a different CC. Same thing happened to me then i just transferred the new results.

Wow really? Does that look good?

I’m going to take an assessment on monday and see how it goes.

but yeah just register at another CC and take a single class?

Sounds almost crazy/impossible

please tell me more

It doesn’t necessarily look like anything, when you send transcripts you don’t have to show the colleges that you enrolled in, just all postsecondary classes you took. Check with your school’s assessment center for their policies on accepting other schools’ placement tests but most California CC’s accept results from any other California CC (not all, just most).

To register for another Community College go to [CCCApply - Apply for Admission](http://www.cccapply.org/AdmissionApp/) then go to the new campus and take the math-only placement at the highest level (you may need to make an appointment). Be sure to study for it! They will probably provide a study guide. Try to do this quickly as the semester has already started.
