Student Banking Near Campus

My D will be a freshman in the fall. Can anyone provide me with names of banks within walking distance to campus? I have read about TCF, however, reports were negetive.

Thanks!

First, congratulations to your D!! Michigan is a great school.

My D is using the University of Michigan Credit Union and likes it. They have branches in the Union and on North Campus, as well as plenty of ATMs around campus:

I’d really recommend going TCF. They have by far the most atm’s on campus and student checking accounts are free. It’s the best option for a student in Ann Arbor.

I highly recommend UMCU, personally. I’ve used it the whole time I’ve been here and it’s a great service. I’ve never heard any complaints about it.

Are bank of america ATMs spread around the campus?

Sent from my SGH-T999 using CC

According to the ATM locator for Bank of America there are only two ATMs on campus and both of them are in fairly awful locations.

Wonderful… but thanks anyway! I should’ve researched some more before i got my debit card from there :frowning:

TCF is just fine

TCF has the most locations on campus - it is OK for student banking as long as your daughter is careful not to bounce checks. Bank of America has two ATM locations near campus - both are in pretty good locations but the branch is on Main Street which could be a bit of a hike.

I read this article, [Cents and sensibility: Why TCF isn’t the leader and best of student banking - The Michigan Daily](Cents and sensibility: Why TCF isn't the leader and best of student banking), in the Michigan Daily and I’m thinking TCF is not a good option for her.

Any thoughts?

At orientation, U of M will provide you (parents) with a chart of the banking options on campus for your student. The chart compares benefits, costs, etc. We chose TCF for our son and he has been happy with their convenience, service, etc. He is OOS so although my husband and I don’t bank at TCF at home, I can easily stop in their local branch and make a deposit in our son’s account. It’s worked out great for us.
