Student body and campus

Hey everybody, I'm a high school junior and Rhodes in one of my top two choices.

I have a couple of quick questions, and anybody who would respond I would be very grateful. First off, I've heard that the campus' location is in a bad part of Memphis, is this true? And also, what is the student body like? Is it like high school where clicks are abundant, or is the student body pretty diverse and accepting?

By the way, how big of a derterminant are standardized test scores in the admissions process?

I've visited Rhodes and it is NOT in a bad part of Memphis. It is across the street from the Memphis Zoo. Mostly residential on the other sides - 1920's style bungalows.

My son is a sophomore at Rhodes and the campus is wonderful. It is totally self-contained, with limited access points. The areas on 3 sides of the campus are just fine, one side is the zoo, another side is very nice residential housing, and one side is mostly churches. The fourth side of campus that borders on the athletic fields is the only side that abuts to a marginal area.

The student body is not that diverse ethnically, but the school is working very hard on increasing diversity. There is a large, active Greek presence on campus, but parties are open to both Greeks and non-Greeks and the fraternities and sororities are not residential so there is not the same division between the Greeks and independents that I have seen on some other campuses.

Rhodes is getting increasingly more selective in the caliber of students that they accept so I have to assume that they will want to see respectable scores that are supported by a high school gpa that indicates a likelihood that the student will be successful if admitted.

My son has been very happy with his experience at Rhodes, but I think a visit will really help you to decide if Rhodes would be a good fit for you.

Sweet, thanks so much ya'll. I was also wondering does Rhodes really award the merit aid that people say they do?

Yes, they do. My daughter, who is attending elsewhere, did receive a very generous scholarship offer from Rhodes. Another poster's student received the Bellingrath - the free ride.
