Student Body Size Overwhelming?

Let's face it with 10,000 undergrads penn isnt what you would call a small school. Its probably closer to the size of Cornell than any other Ivy. Since it is located on a fairly small plot of land does Penn seem overwhelmingly crowded?

that would probably depend on your background; if you're from a small town, perhaps it may be overwhelming at first, but if you're from a large town / city, probably not.

i came from a small town, and penn wasnt really overwhelming.

penn's ugrad(and grad for that matter) numbers aren't small, but its never an endless mob of different faces. the fact that campus is small is good, because it concentrates the people, so that (and facebook) make sure you get a good idea of who's in your class, though youre never going to know everyone in your class, but do you really want to?

I don't find it overwhelming at all and I'm only a freshman. Granted, I'm fairly outgoing, but I see people I know everywhere I leave my dorm. You get to know people from your dorm, your classes, whatever ECs you do, your friends' friends, etc. And once you have an established group of friends, you'll really find that the campus feels small. I see the same 200-300 people every weekend.

Campus is only packed at :50 on the hour when everyone gets out of class.

The main problem is figuring out which people to say hello to around campus, and which people to pull out your cellphone and fake text.

I conceive of varying levels of friendship...

1.) Friends you always stop and converse with

2.) Friends you say hi to always, occasionally start a conversation, but at least make some snappy comment to

3.) People you don't talk to unless you see them at parties

4.) People you don't talk to, but say hi to them in the van pelt or high rise elevator, or would talk to on the first day of classes if you found out you had a seminar/
recitation together (Mengcheng you and I are at this level)

5.) People you happy birthday on facebook

Imagine how difficult college life would be if everyone knew everyone. I'd never get a date. I consider the fact that Penn has a seemingly endless mass of people to be a nice and ever-present opportunity to expand your social horizons

i love being quoted almost as much as ilovebagels loves himself

"i love being quoted almost as much as ilovebagels loves himself"

best post in this thread

Mengcheng you underestimate my capacity for narcissism. you don't love being quoted NEARLY as much as I love myself (and justifiably so, mind you)

I will jazz on your face while you sleep, you quisling

And I'll jazz on your face when you're awake.

I love Louis Armstrong.

^ I knew you were a man of good taste.

One thing Penn needs is more jazzers. (Ludacris notwithstanding )
