How important is student council when it come to college applications. I know that leadership positions are important, but what about student council specifically? I'm a freshman, and I'm trying to decide whether to do it. My chances aren't exactly perfect, since i dont know too many people (only some ppl from my middle school). The deadline for applications is Friday...Do I do it or not? HELP!!!!!!!!!

Do you want to do it? Do you like organizing things for assemblies and pumping up the school with big neon signs that say: "GO TEAM GO!" and working with the bureacracy that is your school's admin? And also, spending time after school thinking of cool ways to greet freshmen? Do you enjoy being part of your school's elite students  in smiling and being the face of your class? Ooh! and also doing the crap work that everyone else is too lazy to do?

Then, yes, do it.

On a more serious note, do what pleases you. You're still a freshman, don't feel obligated to do leadership positions for college. Do things that you think are worthwhile because then, you'll excel. If you're going to do anything, do it well.

The leadership positions should come naturally if you find some ECs you enjoy.

Leadership is good for college apps but there are so many ways it can be shown - it doesn't even have to be so organized and in student government. Four years is a long time. Think about it.

I agree with the other poster. If you think you'd genuinely like student council, do it. Otherwise, seek out clubs with your interests and try to get leadership positions there. You probably won't have many, if any, as a freshman (officers and other positions of rank are usually reserved for upperclassmen, and with good reason), but its more important that you find a few things now and stick with them then do something you don't really like.

I hear that if you are intersted in politics or a future in politics, joining Student Council is a must...

however personally I am not interested at all in it, I rather do something funner like debating, MUN or something.

^where did you hear that? In fact, who needs to do ECs strictly related to their prospectivie major (excluding, of course, Wharton prospectives and the like)? I think I would treat a business major with soccer just as well as a math major with calculus club or the like.

Hell no.

Don't do it unless you want to be an officer.

I love student council, it just depends on if you want to put all your free time into it.... it is a LOT of work, so make a wise choice. SC does look good on college applications, but if you find another leadership position you're good too.
