What is the exact amount a student may earn before it bumps the efc? I know that is in the neighborhood of 3,000, but what is the exact amount?

$3,249 pre-tax dollars. Each dollar of income over that gets assessed at a whopping 50%. And if it's still in his/her account on the day FAFSA is filed, it gets hit with another 20% (ouch!).

Thank you. I thought it was around there. My kid asked, so I thought I would try to get an answer. That 50% assessment is not encouraging kids to be working beyond the $3249 IMO.

And-- for Profile schools, the student is expected to contribute at least $1550 ($2150 for upperclassmen), with no income protection allowance. A student will owe only the minimum contribution so long as his/her income is below $3357 ($4656 for an upperclassman).
