Student Govt. Campaign Advice?

Im going to start campaigning for senior class president within the next few weeks and I was wondering if anyone had any unique campaign ideas that they've used in thier own elections. I'm probably going to be an underdog but I'm good at campaigning so im not worried.

I go to a large school with 705 students in the junior class (seniors next year) so im going to have to figure out a way to reach as many of them as possible even though I dont know many of them.

There is no speech given, which really sucks because thats where I'd be able to shine. And without a speech it is really nothing more than a popularity contest so I'm gonn have to work extra hard.

One of my best ideas has been making a myspace page for my campaign where i can post platforms and movies and pictures and send the page to people through the interenet...but i need more than that.

Anyone have any good campaign strategies?

bump......

EVery day sit with a different clique and talk to them. Don't focus too much on the popular kids because they are probably not that numerous. Instead talk to the other groups, not about you running for President, but build a relationship/friendship with them. Then further on down the line you can bring up the fact that you are running for President and ask them, What do you look for in a President. Be bold, but not annoying. Be Proactive but not overbearing. People vote for people they like. People like people who they feel are on their level and who they think is fun. ( meaning not smarter than them ect. ect.)
Good Luck

My school may be different from yours. However, in MY school, people tend to vote for the more laid-back candidate. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't do ANYTHING... just don't be too over-the-top or intense. I'm sure that you have many great ideas and that you'll be a hard worker, but, as you acknowledged, school elections are often popularity contests. So, try to act amiable and easy-going. Many students vote for a relatable, approachable candidate- so be that candidate! I disagree with the "sit with a different clique" approach. I think that that would just make you seem fake (you don't normally talk to these people, and you're just doing it to get something out of them). Certainly be friendly to many people, but don't let others get the impression that you're fake or manipulative.

I thought that the myspace idea was very good!

our school just had our all-school officer elections [different from senior class...only seniors can run but anybody can vote] last week, and i won vice president. basically i just tried to get everybody and anybody i could out to the polls. most people don't vote in our elections (my school has about 600 people per grade) unless they are friends with somebody running, because they don't care. my suggestion is to make campaign buttons, and have your friends/teachers wear them. also, i made flyers and hung them up in classrooms of teachers that liked me, and it seemed to work well. finally, on the day of the elections (held during lunch) i went around to random lunch tables and asked people to vote for me. i felt like a bit of a fool at times, and some people looked at me like i was crazy/absolutely refused to vote for me, but i also had a large number of people who normally wouldn't vote go vote for me, just because i took the time to introduce myself and ask them personally for their support.

another thing: make posters and hang them all over the school. that way, when somebody goes to vote for a different position (say their best friend is running for secretary or something), and they see a bunch of names on the ballot for president that they don't know, they'll recognize yours and be more likely to vote for it.

thanks so much these are all really great ideas. I plan to get out there and try to people, trying to sway them to vote for me but it could be diffecult considering I'm not sure who is senior and who isn't. But I plan to just go to each table and find out who they are and what grade they are in.

well, when i was running for vp of my class, i made a lot of wacky posters using InDesign/Illustrator. I don't know how good you are w/that, but you could use photoshop, too.
This was earlier in the year, so I made posters to play on "I'm bringing sexy back." Instead, my posters said things like, "She's bringing savvy back" and "She's bringing awesome back." People said they were really funny.

Also, I made some other posters that were spoofs of different ads. I took a nike ad, and where it should have said "Just do it," it said, "Just vote (my name went here)". Since I was running for vp, I took a bp gas station ad and photoshopped it to say "vp" instead of "bp." I also did some things with star wars, juicy juice, geico, etc.

the guy who ran for prez made posters with different presidents on them, and put his picture next to the presidents. they said things like "Honest (his name here" instead of Honest Abe, and "(Name) will never tell a lie" to play off Washington.

Both campaigns were pretty successful, and people liked the funny posters. Good luck!

Give everyone free stuff.

treat the whole thing like a huge joke. be self-deprecating and ironic. that way, the vast majority of apathetic students will probably vote for you.

ever seen napoleon dynamite?

last year, some kid made signs saying "vote for pedro" and then they crossed out pedro and wrote their name.

i thought it was cool ;)
