Student Gov't- Does it help?

If you're elected to be the senator representing your class (i.e. class of 2007) in student gov't, is it of any help at all as part of EC/Leadership? Thanks.

It depends.

If it's just a feather in your cap--a little bit but not a heck of a lot.

If you can write an essay out of it, it's golden.

thanks.

bump

Yeah, I face the same situation.

I've been nominated for the last 3 student council elections but never really got elected. Now, next week is another annual election, and I'm trying to decide whether or not I should go for this one, since people say that student gov sometimes really helps and demonstrates your leadership skills.

Can it boost your chances significantly at the Ivies, or is it just one of many cliched hs ecs?

By the way, I'm already involved in several clubs for years, and I'm also the president of Junior statesmen Killarney chapter (the largest student run club on campus). Should I take this student gov't election with seriousness, or should I just ignore it?

Don't really know, honestly. I'm willing to bet, however, that participation in student government will be of equal or greater value in comparison to being president of a smaller club. Either way, it can only help you, and it cannot hurt.

Also, how helpful are the "Youth Congress" or school district student advisory councils?

I am my schools student Affairs student body president. I do things like: poilcy, liason between the student and the administration, programing (drug), working with the communities, assemblies)

However, prior to this year I was not on student council, however I was on model UN, SADD (PR, and Vice President) and teh student coordinator for the Red Cross blood drive.

Would it be appropriate to write an essay about my humanitarian efforts/community outreach...o tie in all of te EC's

Essays help you.

Notations do not, at least not significantly.

All this talk of "liked" and "not liked" activities at elite colleges is pointless if you understand the selection process. They sit down, look at your entire application, and decide what kind of person you are.

Being "liked" or "not liked" as a PERSON matters. If you have too many feathers in your cap, you'll likely be percieved as shallow and prestige-seeking rather than genuinely interested, unless you have some corroborating evidence, that you are not just a person who does all these things for the college application.

Your essays and recommendations are golden. Each little notation is not.

Student Gov. in HS is all about planning dances and stupid assemblies. If you join and change all of that, that'll be your ticket in.

student gov is really just a symbolic organization. It should be given and exercise more power and responsibility if it wanted to be called a "government."
