Our HMO insurance does not cover our daughter OOS so we bought insurance thru her school. It is a good policy she has used it a lot. She is a dancer and hurt her knee this year- she was able to get physical therapy that was covered completely under the policy. When our older son graduated from college and was no longer on our policy a few years ago, we bought insurance thru Kaiser for around $80/month. It did not have great coverage, but would have covered him for a catastrophic event, which is all we were looking for. Fortunately, his insurance from his new job kicked in quickly!

We tried to get S covered by Kaiser but they rejected him because he has mild, well-controlled asthma. We were able to get our BCBS plan to issue him a separate policy for under $300/month from mid Aug until 1/1/11, when he could be readded to H’s policy. He qualifies for insurance under his new job but has been dragging his feet about choosing & putting in the paperwork. It is somewhat bewildering, the myriad of choices available to federal employees. It has taken me ALL DAY figuring out the options & talking with our current insurer, which will be his 2ndary. Sheesh! It sure is complicated to sort out!

Note that at least some school policies have optional riders that increase the maximum coverage into 6 figures.
