Has anyone had experience with the Aetna student insurance? We are trying to decide whether to switch from our family plan for our daughter as any charges at the University Health Center would be out of network on our current plan.

It’s pretty good, the copays are decent, and I didn’t have any issues with billing.
Note that visits to the student health center are covered under student fees, and are not billed to your insurance - only visits to the hospital, or tests, etc are not covered.

Why not get a doctor somewhere in Charlottesville? I’m on Cigna and they gave me a doctor on Rosehill Drive, which is a 5-10 minute walk from a UTS bus stop (and it’s on CTS Route 9).

I would a) keep her on some sort of insurance and b) decide whether the costs of switching her outweigh the negatives (I know I get my yearly checkups of eyes/health and dentist check ups while on summer/xmas break…that’s where most of my costs in health care occur, so it may be beneficial to keep her on a local plan)
She does need to be on some type of insurance. I know many people, myself included, that had health emergencies at school and needed immediate attention, whether it be for an ER visit, Xray, or general doctor visit.

Like shoe said, the majority of your health expenses will come usually from your dental checkups and eye checkups.

Under my parents insurance, the UVA hospital is not in-network. Because of that, I got the Aetna Student Insurance for peace of mind in case of an ER visit/MRI/xray/etc. But, the Aetna plan is not amazing coverage, and because of that, I get my eye/dental checkups done at home, over break where they are covered by my parents insurance.

Her current coverage is basically catastropic coverage as out of network coverage would only begin after a deductible of $7,000. In network the out of pocket is $3,000 so I’m wondering if it makes sense to switch her coverage to the Aetna plan. Premiums are about $60 more a month on the Aetna plan. I’m thinking it would be easier to find physicians that take the Aetna plan in Charlottesville if she needed to go outside of the Health Center.

It sound like the cheaper alternative for you is Aetna, there are loads of doctors in CVille that take the Aetna plan.
