Student-Life as a Music Major at Michigan?

bridgemail - the less you know the less you worry. Thank you for that! I am not musical so this is all new territory for us. D loved Michigan instantly when we visited – just a strong gut feeling. This was confirmed when she returned to audition. If we can make it work financially, I think that is where she will end up (she also really liked USC and we haven’t heard yet). While D will certainly try to find out about a studio assignment before she accepts I really like what you said about trusting Michigan’s system and keeping an open mind. I needed to hear your sane words in the midst of this crazy time.

I’m not musical either. We just tried to find a variety of environments that had “possibilities” and that were affordable. Undergrad seems short in hindsight but in some ways it’s a long 4 years with many twists and turns. Modeling an open mind, flexibility and open communication with faculty will pay dividends. When those twists and turns come (and they will), your D will be in better position to cope, re-adjust and flourish again (after a day, a week or even a month or two sometimes).

@MomOf2TeenGirls - For a music major who lives in the Baits Hall, would the student ride a bus to Central Campus to take his/her general education classes like Freshman English Comp, Math, HIstory, etc. Also, do you know how many non-music classes per semester they have to take? Thanks.

@Apso555 - Yes, there are UM buses that go between North and Central every few minutes. Also, “hour”-long classes are scheduled for fifty minutes, beginning at ten minutes after the hour on Central and ten minutes after the half-hour on North. That means you would typically have at least 40 mins between classes on the two campuses. My D has more of an issue making it from an engineering class on one side of North to rehearsal on the other side than from campus to campus.
While it depends on major, most music students have one class/semester on Central. You can find semester-by-semester guidelines for SMTD majors at http://www.music.umich.edu/current_students/student_resources/curricularlayouts.htm. Everything like musicology, music theory, etc is in the music building on North. English, foreign languages and most non-SMTD electives are at Central.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, MomOf2TeenGirls, for the link! It looks like Non-SMTD requirements are very reasonable. It doesn’t require a student take science, math, or history/social sciences if a students is not interested.

Wow, @sopranosings I can’t believe that! Maybe they just say that so we won’t bug them. We have to make decisions by May 1. I did see in the archives here that someone had not been notified until mid April about a fairly substantial scholarship, so I guess it could be that late.

Did you get letter from SMTD today? It was a very general congratulations and said that FA and scholarship decisions will be emailed during the first week of April. Still crossing my fingers that it is sooner and I am sure I will continue to check WA twice a day in the meantime.

@sopranosings yes we got that letter–I hadn’t read all the way to the end about the FA decisions coming the first week of April! I really hope we get it sooner. The fact that it’s coming via email is also a surprise. Thanks for the heads up!
