Student Life at Cooper Union

Hey Guys! I was accepted for Mech E. at Cooper Union Class of 2019. I was wondering if some of the Cooper union current students or graduates could share their experiences on the academics…professors…living off campus…food nearby…and student body. How has the new tuition raise affected Cooper Union?

There are a ton of restaurants in the area which cater to college students and others. The school is in the East Village of Manhattan and is close to NYU.

“How has the new tuition raise affected Cooper Union?” - VERY badly. There’s an overall feeling of distrust and distaste for the administration. Poor communication between upper level management and students and faculty. Most importantly, the amount of work required to stay afloat at cooper is over 19.5 credits. Note that cooper will be charging 1,200 dollars or more for each credit over 19.5 starting September 2015.

@einsteinbaby‌ in your other post you said 2000 and not 1200? also, can you please clarify if you mean 19.5 credits per semester or per year

@margiela15 it hasnt been decided yet, but anywhere from 1200 to 2400

You have stated that they will block access to CC in another thread. They can’t block facebook or any other networking sites…can they? Anyways if you can somehow release information regarding Cooper then I will try to ensure that it is needfully highlighted at CC!! Thanks Guys for fighting for the new freshman students of Class of 2019!!

considering the core courses take up about 17 -19 credits …how many credits do students often overload with?

@ShellP‌ They’re blocking CC so students don’t alert the incoming class. only access is possible through a VPN. They have the ability to block any hostname they wish.

Also, core courseload is around 19.5 credits. However, the realities of how classes fill up (and they fill up quickly and lock kids out) mean that some semesters you’ll take 19, others 21, 17, 25, etc.
I only know of 3 or so kids taking 19.5 or less credits. Most students try to stay ahead of the game and have a cushion just in case, so they take around 21 credits. This is not like any other school. Taking 20+ credits per semester is almost expected.

@einsteinbaby‌ Is this normal for all students or just art/eng/arch

@margiela15‌ art/eng/arch are the only three schools. What I said above applied to everyone at Cooper.

Student life is atrocious. Expect to be absolutely miserable, dealing with hypocritical and uncaring professors and administrators. Also expect to deal with absolute total institutional dysfunction.

The student body is nice however, and the food in the area is expensive, but good.
