We applied to Cal, we got into Cal, and now most of us are going to Cal!

So the question is, what to do when we finally get there?

I’m thinking band and model UN, what about everyone else?

You should have gone to Cal Day on Saturday. You missed a major opportunity to experiece the campus and community!
http://www.berkeley.edu/calday/

i'm doing band too..and UCBUGG (uc berkeley graphics group)

what makes you think I didn't go to Cal Day?

Hate to be a wet-blanket, but school here takes a TON of time, so be prepared to do only ONE activity. Otherwise, the possibilities are totally limitless and only bound by your imagination. If you can't find a club to suit your needs, FOUND IT!

Well, you'll probably be studying a lot unless you're the smartest person on the planet.

I'm going to try for the Berkeley Group, or maybe one of the vocal groups. Ach, so many choices! Hehe, I'm probably on like... 10-15 mailings lists now...

BackToReality

What's the first largest club on campus?

AAA: Asian American Association

Second largest?

BCR - Berkeley College Republicans.

I'm thinking ASUC and a business club which I'm still deciding on

Model UN? Please. Model UN in high school was for people who couldn't beat forensics. Join Cal forensics. Why do you think all high school speech & debate teams look forward to the Berkeley tournament in Feb? It's one of the largest and best ones!

qwerasdf, if being a delegate isn't to your liking, then Berkeley also offers a high school MUN program in which you're the moderators and secretaries, presiding over high school delegates from all over the state.

Can't argue with forensics, though. Lots of good fun and debate. Either way, they'll take up a good chunk of time.

BackToReality: if by vocal groups you mean acapella groups, then be prepared to leave out a hefty chunk of your time. Most groups practice in the range of 6-10 hours a week not counting weekly performances and self-practice. Men's and Women's Chorale is probably preferable for an incoming freshman simply because it doesn't take as much time, and let me tell you, when you first get here, you'll want as much time as you can get.

A note: typically, groups (AAA, BCR, etc.) only have weekly meetings that you don't have to attend unless you want to, as well as the occasional trip to wherever the higher-ups feel like, so it's not like a total sacrifice of your time. Acapella groups, however, are naturally not as forgiving about not showing up to practice and events.

Thanks pookdogg. That sounds like a better idea, I probably will be extremely busy without a major time commitment (outside of school) to worry about. I'm assuming The Berkeley Group is a horrendously large time commitment?

BackToReality

Rally committee and a fraternity for sure, haven't really thought about anything else. Maybe a business club or two or possibly ASUC (but i doubt it).

I heard the school newspaper The California Daily was actually independent from the university, but do we apply through the school? And can we apply as freshman?

It seems pretty easy. They said they'll accept anyone, they sent an email to people who signed up @ Cal Day. PM me and I'll send you a copy.

I'm going to join the Ultimate team and the Go (Wei Chi) Club. I also I'm considering trying to start a chapter of the SDS (revival?). I founded one at my high school but I doubt it'll be anywhere as easy. Maybe a Chinese Yoyo club too. Or, alternatively, I am going to probably have zero time and won't do anything outside of a textbook.

yea bump for ultimate. anyone else joining ulitmate at cal? are there a lot of people who try to join (ie is it competative)

Ultimate team is very competitive and will eat up gobs and gobs of time. Only join if you are extremely serious about the sport and are willing to sacrifice a good chunk of your college life playing something that, to be frank, you could play in pickup games (and there are many around campus). I don't want to belittle the Ultimate team: they're very good at what they do, and it sounds like they have a lot of fun. But as an avid Ultimate player, I find much more pleasure in playing on Memorial Glade or midnight disc at Maxwell Field.
