<p>You’ll use federal loans for as much of the tuition as possible, and then private loans from a bank. The federal loans you can take out in your name (assuming you’re 18), and the bank student loans will need a cosigner. The amount you can borrow and the rate will depend on the cosigner’s credit history.</p>
<p>Being 18 has nothing to do with federal loans. If a student is in college s/he is eligible for Stafford loans. Anything beyond that requires a cosigner.</p>
