Student loans - where do I start?

D just finished her freshman year at a state university. We filled out the FAFSA before her freshman year. She didn't qualify for anything except some student loans which we didn't want. So we did not fill out the FAFSA for next fall since we didn't expect any different outcome. However, D now wants to transfer out of state u to private u. Due to the circumstances involved, her father and I believe it would be best for her to be responsible for the cost of private U. She obviously could not afford it without student loans. If she does well in school, we will most likely pay the student loans off for her.

Since the world of student loans is new to me, I do not know how to begin. Do we have to fill out the FAFSA, or is it too late? Can she go to our local bank for a student loan? Would we have to co-sign (something we are not willing to do)?

Thanks!

the maximum amount of a stafford loan for a sophomore will be $6500

No, it’s not too late to do a fafsa. No cosigner is necessary for a stafford loan

If she has ‘financial need’, her school MAY offer a small perkins loan which is disbursed thru the school.

You MUST file a fafsa to get either of these loans
