Student Looking for Honest, helpful advice (new to cc)

Hi all, this is my second post on CC. Ive been reading threads on here for a while and finally decided to join and start posting the other day.

I am preparing to transfer after my sophomore year next year and was looking for advice in creating a list of schools to apply to. I feel like every so often I'll hear about a school that I had never previously considered and become interested so I wanted to see what the nice people on CC thought!

Major: business/Econ (but mostly business lol)
Looking for great schools and schools that offer scholarships to transfer students or nice with fin aid.

These are the Schools I plan on applying to so far:
Cornell (AEM)
USC (Business)
Umiami (international marketing finance)

Also, what do you guys think is a good number amount of schools to apply to? Don't want to overdo it haha.

So without further ado, my stats:

applying from a community college in California
Entering as: Junior

HS gpa: 3.1/4.0 (my effort level was seriously lacking, satisfied by coasting by with B's)
College gpa: 4.0/4.0 (during transition from high school to college I realized I really had to work to get what I want. Took 21 units first semester (ppl called me crazy) and got the first 4.0 of my life. 19 units 2nd semester and all A's again.

Units: Just completed my first year of college and took 40 units in 2 semesters (as i just said lol). Taking Public Speaking and Physics currently over summer session.

Ec's: very involved in school, part of honor society ptk (and doing leadership), international ambassador to international students on campus, started own investing club (serving as president), played baseball first semester (offered redshirt, declined to focus on school and other things). serving as an RA (resident assistant) for my sophomore year next year. my cc is rare in that it has a private company that provides a 1st year dorm living experience for freshmen. also had an internship at a law firm in high school and worked at a bagel shop.

got presidents honor roll both my 1st and 2nd semesters. also should have very strong recs from teachers ive formed strong relationships with.

Taking 17.5 units in fall and 16 in spring of next year. got everything planned out school-wise.

Never thought I would be applying to schools like Cornell when i first entered college but with the support of a really encouraging counselor and people around me, i am hoping to make my dream of attending a top school a reality!

Thanks for reading this and offering your advice to me!!

Best

Bump bump bump!

Anyone?

Since you’re completing 2 yrs at a CCC, it seems like you should be in good position for a CA public; I’m not that familiar with the system, so I suggest you post on the UC Transfers subforum under this one.

If you’ve got some safeties and matches accounted for w/CA publics, then you could afford to do as many reachy privates as you want or need to based on admissions and financial factors.

Whether or not a school will give you ‘good’ FA depends on 3 factors:

 1. The school.
 2. Your family’s need as assessed by the school.
 3. How much you can afford.

So, while Cornell is a pretty good school for FA, it may or may not work for you depending on how much need they calculate for you and whether or not that is doable for your family. You also have to consider how much in loans a school will give in their FA package. The best way to estimate are the COA calculators that each school now has, but it is just an estimate and works the best with uncomplicated financial situations. Also, you need to check college FA websites or call them to find out how they treat transfers.

I’m assuming might have merit for transfers USC & UMiami? There is a link to some schools with merit for transfers in the Resources sticky thread a the top of this forum.

Sounds like you’re doing a great job, best of luck!

Thank you for your response!

I will be applying to a couple in state public schools but I’m hoping it doesn’t come to that because the budget cuts here for our school system are getting worse and worse. I’m too afraid to get stuck in that system which is why I am aiming for private.

Aside from endowments and FA are there any schools you would recommend for me to apply to based on my stats that you think I would be competitive at?? I’m in the “schools applying to” list phase right now. Was thinking to apply to between 6-10 schools. Is that a good #? Thanks again for your helpful input!

I think your stats look great, 4.0 with a heavy course load; unless you’ve been taking fluff classes that is excellent.

And since you’re a CC transfer, your reason for transfer is obvious and you just need to concentrate on why the schools you apply to are good for you and what you’ll contribute to them.

I think 6-10 is good as long as you have those solid backups in the CA publics. In a sense it’s like fr admissions because you don’t have a current school to fall back on so you still need a range of safety/match/reach schools.

I’m afraid I don’t know much about business schools, I suggest asking on the College Search & Selection forum and the Business Majors forum. Just remember to choose schools over a range of transfer acceptance rates, then you are less likely to be shut out of all the privates and end up in a public that you’re not particularly happy with.

Thank you entomom! Very helpful post :)

Anyone else with tips/advice for me out there???
