My son's whittled his college decision down to Pomona or the Oberlin dual-degree program. He hopes to major in something life-science-y but is far from specific, yet. He's a serious violinist in classical, jazz, and folk genres... loves to play and jam and is solidly semi-pro, but does not anticipate going pro after college.

Can anyone give an impression of the student music scene at Pomona, or in the Consortium generally? What fraction of kids play (or sing), reasonably seriously? Are there a few chamber ensembles, jazz combos, rock bands, or contra-dance groups on campus?... or are are there a few in each dorm? Do students or student groups play gigs off campus, or travel to festivals, or otherwise associate with the larger LA music scene?

The formal music program at Pomona seems fine; my son enjoyed his sample lesson with Todor Pelev, met with Eric Lindholm, and feels like he'd fit in at a good level (though he didn't get to observe an orchestra or chamber music rehearsal, to his disappointment). We're just trying to get a better handle on the informal aspects of music there, and the range and depth of other music opportunities.

Any Pomona or CCC musicians... or music lovers... welcome to comment!
