<p>Just not true. REALLY. And I specifically KNOW it’s NOT true in philosophy, which is the subject at issue here.</p>

<p>This language is from the website of the department of philosophy at the U of Pittsburgh, which has a very highly ranked Ph.D. program. </p>

The department offers incoming doctoral students five years of financial support (consisting of an annual stipend, remission of tuition fees, and health insurance). Typically first-, third-, and fifth-year graduate students are supported by fellowships (with no teaching responsibilities) while second- and fourth-year students are appointed as teaching assistants in the fall and spring semesters. </p>

<p>The department is often able to offer teaching support to students beyond their fifth year.
