Apparently he was here on a scholarship in ChemE at a Texas U. While I question the fact that international students receive scholarships over US students anyway. I'm sure there are good reasons in some cases, expanding student body, intellectual & global diversity, etc, etc.

Should we think more carefully about giving ChemE scholarships to international students from "sensitive regions"?

Unlike most countries, the Saudis give scholarships that enable their citizens to study elsewhere. This articles says he is the first scholarship recipient known to have been accused of terrorism to date.

Yes, he entered the country on a student visa in fall 2008 and attended an English language program at Vandy through summer 2009. Then enrolled at Texas Tech and just transferred to SPC. Vandy confirmed that he did attend the program there but wasn’t a matriculated student.
