Has anyone ever read the reviews from a web site called Student Review?

http://www..com/AZ/ASU_comments.html?t

Generally they are not too good. I know that everyone doesnt like every school, but I didnt get a very warm and fuzzy from the reviews.

No, I imagine a lot of people hate it here. I don’t, but I’m in the honors college. I don’t really interact with the blonde bimbos and frat boys because quite frankly, most of them aren’t too bright. (Not all, certainly, just most.) I personally think it is such a big school you can find your niche, but I also know I wouldn’t have gone here if there weren’t an honors college with separate dorms. I also don’t take stupid classes. And I’m not a Business or Communications major, which helps. (Nothing wrong with the majors, but that’s where you generally find these people.) I don’t think the academics are bad at all. Admittedly, however, I have taken mostly honors courses. I assume you considering ASU? I too read this sight and had misgivings, but I’m pretty content here.

I am considering. I have been accepted to the Engineering Department. Thanks for your feed back

People tend to take for granted what they didn’t have to work for. ASU has a mandate to accept all in state students basically.

I guess that I should also say is keep in mind that people who are unhappy are more likely to write reviews than those that are happy. I personally loved my ASU experience.

I have to say, as a prospective student for the honors college, I was wondering about those reviews as well. I have gotten into several more highly ranked schools, but it seems as if the honors program there is excellent.

I read through them and the consensus seemed to be that the school was full of rich partiers, but I can’t imagine that an honors college would be like that.

It isn’t, that I’ve seen. I mean there are rich partiers, but not like described in the reviews. You can be rich and partier without being like the people criticized in the reviews. My roommate would fit a lot of the stereotypes, but she is a really nice, awesome person. In my experience, your assumption is correct, the honors college is different. I quite like it here, and my idea of a perfect college would be a Midwestern liberal arts college, so I think the fact I, and among many other people whose ideal is very different, like it here says a lot for it.

Here’s my experience at ASU…

I am currently a freshman at Arizona State University. I go to the downtown campus. Now ASU has 4 campuses. Main Campus in Tempe, Downtown, West and Poly. I don’t know what to say except I find the school extremely unorganized. I was a criminal justice major to begin the semester and even if the advising offices and most of the classes for criminal justice is located downtown some classes that were required were only offered in Tempe. I go to Downtown and not Tempe for a reason. They make it extremely hard for you to double major. I switched my major to journalism. Then wanted to declare a double major in Criminal Justice. The advising for Criminal Justice is not very organized. You don’t have an assigned advisor so you walk in for an appointment and almost see a different person every time. Well when I was attempting to double major the criminal justice people were making it hard on me. They were telling me that it would be a lot of paperwork to fill out and they just seemed really lazy about it. They had me fill out this petition on reasons why I wanted to double major. Then they wanted me to write some statement saying why I wanted to also do criminal justice. The journalism program here is pretty good. You have an assigned advisor. Mine is great best advisor I have ever had she really cares. My issue is ASU only lets you take one lower division journalism class at a time so if you mess up you can throw off your graduation date.
Don’t even get me started on how horrible the west campus is. I lived there fall semester and my goodness. First off it’s located in Glendale Arizona. You might think hey that’s where the cardinals play or that’s where the dodgers do spring training. UM you are located far far away from that in the middle of nowhere. This is what surrounds the campus: An ace hardware, a denny’s, a bartending academy, a drive thru liquor store need I say more? Terrible atmosphere there. I do not even party! It’s horrible you can hear a pin drop there its so quiet. Even though I don’t party I like talking and meeting people but at ASU west there is a lack of people. The dorms though are amazing. I lived in a 4 bedroom apt style dorm. 4 people, 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 4 sinks, a living room and a kitchen. The campus is pretty much dead all day. I remember going around with my camera during the 3-4 pm time range and snapping photo’s of the campus and there was not a single person in the photo. The cafe has great food but overpriced and it closes early. It is a commuter campus. It is very convenient and has nice class sizes though. The events are terrible and it’s just an overall awful place. Keep in mind this opinion is coming from someone who doesn’t party, who made the dean’s list and who is very much involved with the school.
I can’t really speak for Tempe though. From what I have seen it’s huge! It’s like a mile walk to each class. Tempe is where all the parties happen. It was mentioned earlier that people go to ASU for the wrong reason just to party. VERY TRUE. Even people from west I knew were so mad that WEST was well west and not tempe. Tempe has a lot to offer and it can be a lot of fun. But expect drunkies, sex addicts, druggies and the partier types.
I will add that school spirit here is amazing the school is all about maroon and gold and the sun devils.
Another negative aspect the school spends way to much money on unnecessary things
I feel in most aspects ASU is a 3rd rate education school which is why I’M OUT OF HERE after the semester.
I can’t wait to transfer. In fact I’m moving back home after this semester this school or place is just not for me.

Can any one comment on the Undergrrduate engineering program in general and anything you can add to EE in particular. I have admits to other higher rated EE programs, but I am considering ASU because I heard they have a pretty good campus recruitment program. Frankly I have stopped believing in US news ratings. I prefer inputs from current students or recent graduates

I have a few friends in the EE program, and my boyfriend is doing Aerospace. Engineering is engineering, no matter where you go. The classes can be difficult but upper-division ones give hands-on experience, and the engineering schools LOVES to fund student research. About 10 of my friends are all being paid to do engineering research…that’s a great benefit from going to a large research university. One of the biggest complaints I’ve heard is that most of the professors are foreign, so they have thick accents and it can be hard to get used to their standards of teaching…plus they aren’t really hired to be teachers, they are hired to do research.

As for ASU in general, if you are looking for a certain experience you can find it. Want to party? You can party. Want to do research? You got it here. Want to just pass on through? Yea, that can be done. Want to get an enriched education with challenging classes and other opportunities? That’s here too! You just have to look…

how do you get into the honors college in ASU?

It’s a separate application that you have to apply for after applying for the regular school.

i actually was only interested in ASU for the barrett honors college. it was called the best honors college in the U.S. a few years ago. the honors college is a small community in a large university. If you are considering going to ASU, i highly recommend the honors college. ASU, or any other school for that matter, is what you make of it. If you want to party, then u can party. But if you are anything like me, then partying is out of the question. I go to ASU for my education and I don’t really understand why people give so much crap towards state universities. It is all higher education to me. People should stop whining about prestige and be happy they will be attending college at all. That is what I think anyway.
