Student safety at Temple

Temple is a very good match for my sons interests but i am very concerned about the area surrounding Temple and his safety-any insight from past students or parents?

That’s what I have been wondering also, I got accepted for Spring 2012 as a transfer, but I’m not so sure if I should go there. I really like the school and everything but I have also heard so much about the bad neighborhood’s and everything that its starting to scare me.

Btw, do you plan to enroll your son into dorms? I been trying to find a place that is reasonable and safe to live at and so far I have heard that N Broad St. and Center City are the safe places to find apartments at.

guys
if you want PM me, grew up in philly went to temple, still in philly everyday for work
temple cannot build dorms fast enough to house all the suburban students who want to attend the campus is as safe as any city school could be
in my opinion safer than all of the other philly city schools
over the last decade it has improved the quality of life for its students tremendously
if you have a car and are looking for off campus housing an area called fishtown is about 15 min away you can rent a house there center city is great, very expensive to live/rent north broad is not where u want to go as far as a safe neighborhood
living at temple, common sense prevails you do not walk the neighborhood late at night by yourself u stay in groups and act appropriately
no different than other city schools anywhere
public transportation is on campus with the subway, u can get to all philly sports in 15/20 min by sub center city 5/10 min
if you are looking for a very good education in an urban environment with a very fair price tag temple has plenty to offer every major imaginable

my close friends all got accepted to med schools and dental schools
always ranked highly in communications , look at all radio/tv personalities locally most are temple grads

any questions just PM me

Thanks for the reply! I visited Temple University and Center City today. TU campus was good, but its true the outside area isn’t what I expected it to be. As for Center city, I went there to just explore things, I looked at some Apartments there which are pricey but some studio at center city which start from $700. I actually wanted to live in Center city, it seems more lively do you think center city is a good place to live at? if I go to Temple?

And one more thing do you know how much per semester the bus transportation will cost me from center city to TU? I don’t feel safe taking the subway but I liked the buses and I think there is some kind of University Discount if we get a Transpass.

The transpass will be good for the bus or subway. You’ll get used to the subway and prefer it, except at night. It’s fine when others are using it and so much faster. The Cecil B Moore station is usually busy with students. Don’t ever take Susquehanna by yourself; walk the 3 blocks to Cecil B.

It’s a great school and you’ll feel safe on campus. Don’t live more than 2 blocks from campus, in my opinion. They are building more housing. A new building intended (brand new) for international students was just built 1 block from campus (Cecil B Moore and Sydenham), with a coffee shop underneath and other stores and outdoor seating going in…there is a pergola built now. They are letting some regular students in for now until it fills with intern’l. A new dorm is going up right on Broad, but it’s still a way off from completion.

24689RS- if you are coming in as a transfer student I am not sure if you have the option to live in a dorm. But if you do have that option, I think it might help you to make friends and get acclimated. If you choose to get an apt in Center City, I think you may end up feeling isolated. IMf you were my S/D I would recommend getting an apartment on or near campus for at least your first year. A young lady that I know came to Temple as a transfer student and found it a little difficult finding friends living in an off campus apartment. I would definitely suggest joining some clubs. Living close to campus will make it easier to participate in campus activities.

SEPTA transpass costs 22 per week or 83 per month. [SEPTA | TransPass](<a href=“Fares | SEPTA”>Fares | SEPTA)

On the general topic of safety, we recently visited Temple campus and you can’t walk a block without seeing campus police. There are two police stations on campus. Blue lights are everywhere, and response time is 30 seconds or less.

The Phila. Inquirer has done some stories on naive college students selling drugs from their apartments and then getting robbed in home invasions. There also was one unfortunate student a few months ago who was killed when he didn’t give up his motorcycle fast enough to a robber.

Generally, the worst neighborhoods are several blocks to the west, north and east. The main campus feels safe the times I have been there. If you don’t live near campus, it is easiest to live somewhere else along the Broad St. subway line.

pamom59 and charlieschm- Thanks for your suggestions, that’s what I’m doing now. I actually find it more safe living near by, I’m most probably going to be living at The Edge apartments, off campus its right on broad st. Lets see how it goes now…

I just randomly saw this threat. My daughter transferred to Tyler School of Art this September from an other art school. She’s commuting by car from our house about 30 minutes away, and because she is an art student she is at the school until all hours. I was nervous in advance of this and called the security office who assured me that they would walk her to her car any time. (She has a parking spot on a campus lot.) Turns out, the campus is bright as day during the night, and there is no sense (according to her) of being in danger, even late at night. It’s true that the surrounding areas are not safe, but I don’t think you need to worry in or very near campus. Or an alternative (and it will be cheaper) would be to live in a Philly neighborhood and commute in.

My daughter was very impressed with Temple. We’ve been looking at many schools…and Temple stood out. We heard from some alumni (25 years ago attended) that spooked us a bit about the safety aspect. I look forward to reading some posts from people that can enlighten us on their take. thanks!

I am a senior at Temple I’ve lived off campus my time here. I don’t want to scare parents into not letting their kids come here. My parents call me every time they see something happening in north Philly. It is a dangerous part of town, their are parts you learn to stay away from and I have had friends get mugged or attacked because they weren’t acting smart while walking. A few tips to give as a survival guide on north broad street, if you’re walking late at night alone I always call one of my friends before leaving and put them on speaker phone. I never have my headphones in because it is the easiest way to lose track of what’s around you. If you see someone who makes you uncomfortable walk with caution or go a different route. Walk quickly and confidently if you look familiar with the area people generally won’t bother you. Don’t carry valuables wide in the open unless you have to. You learn the areas to stay away from quickly and campus is relatively well lit. I have lived in 2 places off campus a few to look at that are in safe areas are: Sydenham commons, montgomery commons, the edge( which is half a dorm half private student housing) Oxford village, university village and kard
to think about sending your child into this area believe me I don’t walk around 100% confident that I’m safe but I take caution I walk with friends or someone on the phone all the other tips as well. Educate your child in street smarts they’ll pick up a few tips of their own but overall I love this school and this city and it has been an amazing experience for me. good luck!

Hi TempleSenior! Its good to see a current student posting here. I wonder if you would take a moment to respond to my question here; would love to get your take on the best and worst of Temple http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/temple-university/1240221-what-best-worst-things-about-temple.html</a></p>
