Nobody wants to say anything anymore?

I think business degree from USC will do you better in terms of employment in the LA area than a sociology degree from JHU would do. I don't think you can say employers get "bored" or these top cali schools. In fact, since they have good experience from hiring from those schools, it'll be even better. While JHU is an excellent school, better than USC no doubt, if you want to do business in LA, USC is the way to go.

Okay, thanks for the truthful answer! Nonetheless, I'm going to visit Hopkins to talk to an academic adviser on Tuesday to see if I can graduate in 2 years with a major in sociology and minor in business administration.

Also, an econ degree from JHU would look pretty great. Are you by any chance considering that?

here's my 2 cents:

go to jhu.
don't major in sociology.
major in econ and minor in sociology if you like it THAT much.

look at this way. the stuff you learn from all of your sociology classes are going to be pretty useless once you start working in the business world.

either one of them will do

by god, just choose the cheapest one.

yeah, i like the_aspirant's idea. You can minor in sociology if you really want...but econ is the way to go for competitive business-y jobs.

the competitive "business-y" jobs that are discussed on this forum do not need economics. On the job training really will suffice.

I like the op's reason for wanting to take sociology, but that really doesn't matter. Take what you enjoy which very well may be sociology (i have not read the entire thread).

It really depends on what you want to do. JHU is a good school, but it's not a target school for business/finance. USC is definitely better for business in LA.

Yes, but econ majors are looked very highly upon in the business world because econ is a very analytical subject. Sociology, is not.

Sociology is looked upon as a fluff degree.

Well I guess I will try to show you guys all wrong then in 10 years. I called the top 20 MBA programs in the US and I asked them if sociology will hinder me any any way and they said absolutely not. Especially MIT Sloan and Stanford which assured me that they love a diversified undergrad.

I've decided.. JHU with major in sociology and minor in business administration. Best of both worlds

and the competitive business-y type majors that are discussed on this forum need advanced mathematics

no

so the fact that it is an analytic subject does not matter. If there was a need to show, it would be just as easy to take one math class/semester.

You do know economics is a social science right? I would suggest you major in econ. I dont even know what kind of a job you need a degree in sociology for.

Major in econ and minor in business and entrepreneurship. Fabulous for highly powered internships in the business world. Also, the mayor of NYC, Mike Bloomberg, is a very supportive alum of Hopkins, and owns Bloomberg Financial, et. al. He is very supportive of Hopkins students. Also, there are many Hopkins alums on Wall Street who are eager to help Hopkins students.
