I have read so many negative reviews about the going to GT and being very stressful. I am just wondering if this is somehow biased by lower level students or its a FACT. I used to love GT for it's ranking but right now just I am just feeling empty and frustrated ...

Yes, never underestimate how irresponsible first year undergrads can be with regards to their coursework (sleeping through class, not doing homework, not studying, etc). Yes, you will be stressed if you wait until the last day to do everything. Otherwise, it is quite manageable.

Student stress exists, even among those who do not verbally complain about it. During finals week of Spring 2008, my neighbor finished early and was leaving. He left a box of granola bars in the lounge for anyone who wanted them. Another guy on the hall came into the lounge and asked why there were granola bars on the table. I explained that my neighbor was leaving and couldn’t take them with him. The guy immediately said, "All right, " and then took the bars with him. He then went down the hall and proceeded to throw the granola bars against the wall as hard as he could. His roommate and neighbors joined in. They kept throwing the bars at the wall and picking them up for a good five minutes. Then they put the bars back in the box and returned them to the lounge. (The granola bars were not expired, by the way.)

Those guys never once complained about being stressed, but obviously, their actions made it abundantly clear that they were very stressed out during finals week. That doesn’t necessarily mean that those students were “lower level.” If you ask me, it just means that Georgia Tech is a good match for them academically. You don’t want to go to a school where you can do the work a minute before it’s due. But you also don’t want to go to a school where no matter how hard you work, you can only pull a C average. Everything in balance.

It’s only as stressful as you make it, though sometimes there are moments when there is nothing you can do. An example is last month I had three exams in a two day period.

The key is just time management. Don’t put stress on yourself by procrastinating.

As long as you don’t overload your semester, it’s manageable. There are some courses where 4 credit hour seem/feel like 7 credit hour course load. Its normal to graduate engineer program with 5 years so if you don’t want stress out to the point where you would like to pull all the hairs off of your head to cool out, take 12 credit hours per semester when you are taking notorious course within your engineer program

Georgia Tech is depressing albeit for different reasons: the social life is terrible in comparison to other universities, the courses are challenging (but by no means impossible) and the college is not reputable enough for the trash we put with. I can understand putting up with Caltech or MIT for four years…the reality is Tech grads end up being as successful, if not less successful than U Mich, UT Austin and RPI grads (and where are they on the rankings?). Majority of high schoolers are misled by the rankings but the reality hits you after your first year; RANKINGS DO NOT TELL THE FULL STORY. I am not complaining because I’m about to flunk out; I have a 3.8 and I still think its terrible. Most pple that come here dont have a choice, they are GA residents that do not want to pay out-state tuition or forfeit Hope scholarship. If you are an out of state/international student (like myself)… there are better options out there.

So you show up on this forum and post a negative review of Tech to nearly every thread in your sight? Clearly someone needs to go get some counseling and probably transfer. You should have plenty of transfer options with a 3.8 from Tech… It is finals week, and I can still say I love this place, its girls (who are not all or even mostly snobs as you insinuated in another thread-perhaps they just don’t like people who complain a lot and expect them to respond positively to all advances…), its social life, the city of Atlanta, etc… You posted in another thread that the ratio is even worse at parties? What parties are you going to/perhaps you should avoid the frats whose members are known for only playing video games…

Agree with emoyewole, I just wish there were more of us to share experiences so that unsuspecting high school students don’t fall into the trap. Rankings are probably the worst way to judge a college, and I can tell Georgia Tech is only high on those rankings because of research most likely.

On finals week and weekends, the place is dead so how can you love the place? How an you say you love the girls when most of them are ugly and are hard to be found or taken by other guys? How can you say you love the social life when it doesn’t exist, other than at fraternities?

Georgia Tech is great if you want to work until you die, but other than that it sucks, and I’m glad there’s someone other than me saying it for once.

I believe in realistic recruitment, that is, telling both the good and bad. I must disagree with schaden, however, on his assessment of the bad.

Georgia Tech should be dead during finals week. I’m graduating this Saturday, and I lucked out with a light finals load, but for many students, they have to take three or more finals in five days, some of which may be cumulative in nature. If students here could party every day of finals week and still ace their finals, then either those students are geniuses or our school isn’t very demanding academically.

Georgia Tech is not a commuter school; most students live on campus. schaden, if you thought the place was dead on the weekends while you were here, you must have never ventured to the Greek Sector, which is always lively during the weekends. You must have never seen the SAC fields or the Burger Bowl, where you can always find students playing frisbee. You must have never been inside the CRC, which always has students doing cardio, lifting weights, or playing basketball. You must have never been to a single organization’s meeting, and we have many.

As for the ladies, well, there are many beautiful women at Tech, but I still think it’s fair to say that there is a reason why most of my friends who have girlfriends do not have girlfriends at Tech.

During the weekend the parking lots are almost completely empty and then on Sunday night the gates are opening and closing every few seconds.

Compared to students at other colleges, students here are way more likely to complain about how much work they have than how much fun they’re having.

I just want people to know what they’re getting themselves into. At Georgia Tech they try to break you down with tons of work and bureaucratic professors and a cut-throat environment. There are many of people there that would rather play video games than make friends or do anything else. Combining that with the fact that girls are very scarce, I don’t understand how you could stand up for Georgia Tech in saying that it is a fun place to be. Granted, all places can be fun if you make them fun, but I find that at Georgia Tech it is a very hard task to accomplish.

I’ll be frank: I’ve never seen what you described happen. Granted, I do not own a car, so that may be the reason.

Perhaps it would be informative for incoming and prospective students if you shared why you found it so difficult to get involved or to participate in campus life over the weekends? It was never a problem for me, and while I am nowhere near as shy as I used to be, I’m far from outgoing.

Definitely go to the parking lots on weekends and you’ll see them empty out.

Sure. Because I didn’t see any of it- whenever I walked the campus during the weekend it felt like it did during the summer when there were only a few hundred students taking classes, not unlike a ghost town.

So you never went to any football games during the Fall? I myself am not a big fan of football at all, but even I went to one of the GT vs. UGA games out of “obligation.”

You never ventured down to the Greek Sector? To describe Frat Row as a “ghost town” during the weekends is a bit farfetched, IMO. I don’t enjoy frat parties, but many do, and so many are available during the weekends.

You never went to the CRC? The weight room is emptier on the weekends than during the weekdays, but the basketball courts are not.

You never joined any student organization? Or perhaps you did, but the club never held any meetings? If so, which club was that?

I agree that Georgia Tech cannot be considered the “most fun” university, but that doesn’t mean that all or even most students suffer while they are here. Compared to UGA, you will indeed find fewer students relaxing on campus during the morning and afternoon in the weekdays; you will mostly see students walking to and from class. In that aspect, yes, other universities have a more relaxed environment than we do. If schaden wants to argue that, I’m in full agreement.

There are definitely negatives to studying at Georgia Tech. In my opinion, a lot of decisions made by the administration suffer from “design by committee” syndrome. For example, who was the genius who decided that it was a good idea to remove the gates at the North Ave apartments? Naysayers can scream “correlation not causation” all they want, but let’s remember that when the gates were removed, crime spiked in North Ave, and when the gates were put back, crime abated.

Indeed, a lot of it has to do with personal fit.

In my opinion, the administration/faculty try to make your life as difficult as possible while you’re there. It’s like you are paying someone else to make your life as difficult as possible, just so you can say you got through it. The only thing good in my mind about going there is the salary afterwards and entry level job prospects.

Some people don’t mind it, some put up with it, and some, like me, decided it wasn’t worth it.

Fabrizio, the campus goes into hibernation after football season. Secondly, I don’t know what frat parties you go to InPursuit. The ship wreck party at delta sig was terrible…I walked in and found a bunch of guys dancing in a circle. The toga party at delta tau delta was even worse. Lets call a spade a spade; all GT has to offer is a good starting salary and entering level job prospects like schaden rightly said. I just want the incoming HS students to be fully aware of this and not make the same mistake I made while coming here.
