Student Visa Questions

My son is at school, a plane ride away from home.

He will not be home until winter break and is currently filling out applications to hand in to the study abroad office at school for Spring term abroad.

As he will not be home, does he need to process/go to the nearest consulate to file the Visa application? How long does the process take?

Any other info is greatly appreciated.

What countries does he want to visit? Some countries do not require a visa depending on how long you are staying. Some visas can be processed electronically with the passport information ie Australia.

Here is a website that you might find helpful.

Some countries require you go to the consulate in person. Others let you mail everything. D is currently in Ecuador and was also a plane ride away from home. All info was mailed to the consulate and returned in time for her to go. (did not take too long even though she forgot to include the processing check with the original application :( Have your S check with his study abroad office. They should know.

My daughter is going to France to study and since she will be there more than 90 days, she had to go to her consulate for our area which was in Atlanta. Even though she was in Washington D.C. earlier, they said she had to go to Atlanta. She went down there and took a prepaid overnight USPS envelope, like they said on their website. Well after rudely telling her that now they wanted Fed-ex, she wasted her money on the usps and got a Fed-ex one there. She got her visa within a few days.
