How would you characterize the typical Dartmouth student? I'm a pretty active person and would like to stay active in college. Are there a lot of club sports in addition to varsity? I'm active in tennis and crew and love to hike and ski as well.

Also, how would you describe the social scene at Dartmouth? How much of a party school is it? I like to party, but not excessively. I've also heard that frats and sororities dominate the social scene. Are frats at D different than at other schools?

Short answer: chill out, you’re the exact kind of kid who has a fantastic time at Dartmouth.

Slightly longer answer: Join the DOC, hang out in frats, and you’ll do fine. You pledge sophomore year so you have a year to find your social niche and decide if the Greek scene is for you. Most frat parties are also open to the whole campus so you can play pong and get trashed pretty much whenever you like, as long as you’re a Dartmouth student. And our reputation as a party school is in large part due to how lame the party scenes at most other Ivies are; we’re not any really worse (or better) than your typical rural liberal arts college.
