Students from the Same Schools

Does anyone know if schools like Princeton only take one student from each school? Does the admissions committee actually read all of the applications from each school together in order to compare?

No no no, Princeton makes its decision based on its assessment of you, not your classmates.

Honestly people, haven't you ever bothered to read the info regarding admission procedures Princeton's provides on its website....?

That is only partially true, MzLover. Because they do pick and choose a well-balanced class, they have to consider the other admitted students too. The last thing they want is 100 people from India/China or 30 from Stuyvesant....

They definitely have nothing against taking more than one though. Last year 6 people from my school went to Princeton. This year three have already been accepted early.
I've heard that they have "quotas" by region, but not by school. I'm kind of suspicious about it though...

I think they accept randomly from each school (based on their critera, obviously), but they perform "double-checks" at the end of the admission cycle and count up how many they have from each school and region. If the numbers are outrageous, or there are way too many from one group, they may revisit the decision.

i dunno but apparently my school had a bad rep with princeton... but last year this 1 hispanic i knew got in, who seemed so-so.

i think it depends on the reputation of the school. maybe if the school has a great rep, they accept more than 1.

I think that's true--that princeton can have relationships with certain schools. (The same goes for any college really) Like, my counselor claims that we have a bad relationship with Yale. On the other hand we have a really good one with Columbia. It does affect things a bit because the quality of the student who goes there from your school reflects on the quality of your school and thus give a college a sense of what to expect from future applicants.

Admissions is done by region and not school.

what about for students who have lived in several countries?

"Honestly people, haven't you ever bothered to read the info regarding admission procedures Princeton's provides on its website....?"

It's not like Princeton would openly admit to doing it. So much of the college admission process is undercover, and I'm sure that we don't know half of what goes on. The question is legitimate (in fact, I asked it a few weeks back); don't dismiss it just because their website says that Princeton is not biased in that way.

yes, I feel as if the whole admission process is so shrouded in mystery it could just be a monkey in the back room throwing darts. Every time he hits the bullseye a student is admitted lol, now THAT would be funny but I dont think that happens, they've got to involve at least one person

They did accept 11 students early from Stuy this year :p

What is the admissions process like at Princeton?

Are decisions decided in one central region in Princeton or at local offices in each state?

All decisions are made at 110 West College :) in Princeton.

both the valedvictorian and i were accepted to princeton from my school. i also expect a legacy to be admitted in the RD round. so no, no. of ppl applying from a school does not matter

Doesn't matter for me cuz I'm the only one! ;)

The top New England boarding schools send 35% +/- of their students to the ivy league, with the larger ones sending double digits each year to P as well as H&Y. Each app is reviewed on its own merits. These schools often publish their matriculation tables.

11 early isn't THAT sick considering they have like 700+ kids in a grade.

11/700 = 1.57%
3/115 (my school) = 2.61%

And stuy probably has more than 700 in their senior class.

My school:
6 Harvard, 5 Columbia, 3 Yale, 3 Princeton, 2 Cornell, 6 UPenn, 2 Brown, 0 Dartmouth.
--> 27/115 = 23.48% accepted early to Ivies this year from my school.
I think that's kind of sick actually. That means that after RD, we're looking at 35%+ going to Ivies (and that's not counting great schools like Stanford, Duke, MIT, etc.)

EDIT: Yea I think my calculations confirm what alphacdcd just said. I go to private school.

WOW....thats not fair :( us public school kiddies get shafted....just another ploy by the MAN to hold us down

my school...so far ED in good schools:

1 duke, 2 JHU Pre-med, 2 Cornell, out of 72.
+ there are 10 students with 1500+, 4.0s, great ECs etc, who are gonna easily get in, + hopefully me and at least 5 others with awesome scores and stunning hooks.

thats about 19 or 20 out of 72...thats about 30%...and this is an above avg. intl school
