Am I the only one who thinks that it is sad that many students now are volunteering or starting community service projects just so that can impress colleges and boost their resume'. The point of volunteering and community service is to help people, not to just add another bullet point to an already excessive application.

Thoughts?

I’d rather that they do community service for the self-serving reason that you describe than never doing community service at all. Community is so rewarding on its own merits that I bet that many students start off by doing community service for college and end up doing community service for more altruistic reasons.

After all, most students wouldn’t even go to school if they didn’t have to do it or if getting an education weren’t essential for getting a good job. We all do many things that originally we were forced to do or did for self-serving reasons.

^Agreed, though I have seen kids at things like Relay for Life that are loud during the slideshow of cancer survivors (and nonsurvivors) or who sneak out on mission trips to go drinking.
