Students without cars

How difficult is it for a Chapman student, especially after fresman year, to get along without a car?? I understand that housing within walking distance of the campus is hard to come by & many students live a few miles away. If any experienced students/parents can provide input, I would appreciate it!!

This was the biggest concern for us because D is in Dodge and would need to do internships. we ended up getting her a car in her sophomore year and that freed her up to look for internships wherever she wanted. she did an internship in Beverly hills in the spring semester of her sophomore year, and had a summer job that was quite a distance. however, she also gave a ride on certain days to a fellow student who had an internship at the Academy; on other days the friend would take the train to work. so the train can be very convenient.D currently lives of f campus and is a half mile from school. that’s a stone’s throw. affordable housing within walking or biking distancecan be found but it takes some work to find one that meets everyone’s ( roommates I.e) needs.

Thanks bigmamabear - I just looked at a map of the metrolink station - I did not realize it was so close to campus. That makes some difference. I actually grew up in the city of Orange, but haven’t lived there since 1986, so the Metrolink was unheard of then!

My S did not have a car his freshman year. He lived on campus, rode his bike to Dodge and to the baseball field about a mile away for practice. As others have noted, Metrolink is really useful. And Chapman provides shuttle service to/from the airport for holiday travel. Really, he did not need a car freshman year. Because he’s interning this spring and summer, he did bring his car for sophomore year, but he still doesn’t drive more than a few miles when he uses it.

I’ll be in Dodge next year and am not bringing my car. Am I going to want a bike to travel from the dorms to Dodge?

Ray626 - my D is in Dodge and didn’t have bike or car in her freshman year and she lived in NoMo. It’s up to you. seems like there’re always used bikes for sale so you might be able to snag one that way after you get there. there are also a couple of bike shops on Glassell.
