Studio art at NYU

How's the fine arts program (studio art major at steinhard) at NYU? How does it compare to art schools like SAIC? Better opportunities coming from this school or waste of money for such a large university?

It's very different. It is not as traditional in any means of the word, I wouldn't choose any art school over NYU. If you want to learn to be a traditional artist, to be a landscape painter, or figure drawer by all means go to a more "normal" art school but NYU offers far more for somebody if you're looking. That said, they are highly selective, only 50-60 kids are taken each year. They really want students who think and are different. I was speaking with one of the reviewers on the board and she said it is difficult for them to find 50 worthy candidates, they turn down a good number of "perfect" portfolios of traditional studies and "classic" pieces. Yeah, you can draw, great.. but can you think?

Thank you, that helps a lot. Wow, i feel pretty privelaged to have been accepted

I was going to transfer out, honestly. I had talked to one of the head Undergraduate Officers at Art Center in LA, which currently is home to the #1 Undergraduate and Graduate Graphic Design programs in the world. The entering age of freshman there is 21 (they structure the school entirely differently than most other colleges, I wont get into it but they want you to get most of your liberal arts credits out of the way first and "mature" as well as get your preliminary drawing/foundational skills developed well then apply to a major.)

Anyway, that was my goal, I loved it there. I loved Yale, I loved RISD. I'm going to NYU, I think that says a lot. The people there are wonderful, I wish you had come to the reception, it was quite nice despite the weather.
