Does anyone know anything about the studio arts department at Vassar? I guess just how strong the major is in general? It seems there is only one actual professor which is odd to me, and the student work on the website didn't seem to exciting. Does anyone have more information on the art program?

bump...

i talked to an art teacher at a private school near me, and she said vassar had a 'small art department' compared with other LAC's. I'm wondering if she meant small but noteworthy, or small and not really that great at all.

i really would appreciate any information you all have on the studio art major.

from what i've heard, the studio art program is fine. not amazing, but good enough if you plan on taking classes

however, the art history department is supposedly very good

Vassar is a small LAC with an accent on the fine arts. I'm sure Vassar's visual arts department is wonderful.

Don't expect a Pratt or RISD art education though. Vassar has a nice department, yes, but is by no means an art school.

Art History is very good, from what I hear.

For a small LAC, Vassar has quite a good studio arts program. And Art History is fantastic... Vassar is particularly well-known for its Introduction to Art History class.

thanks! this is helpful. i already decided to give up an actual art school education for the benefits of a LAC, so now i'm just working on finding the best art education i can at a school that will actually fit me ('unique' lac).

Well, from what colleges I've visited in the NY/new england area, it seemed to me that Vassar, Bard, SLC, and Skidmore had strong visual arts programs
