Studio Placements

I got placed in Lee Strasberg. I’m sure that it’s a great studio. But I am soo disappointed. It seems like this whole college application process has been one disappointment after another. This makes things really hard. Whether I want to go with an Acting studio or Muhlenberg for musical theater…
Is there any way I can, appeal, or whatever? What if someone who get into CAP21 declined and opened up a spot.

Strasberg also offers MT training as part of their program and that acting technique is so useful and it is great for film acting! Amazing people have come out of there, check out their website.

but I won’t be able to get the same kind of intense voice and dance training as in CAP21. I know that I can take dance at the broadway dance center, but there’s no way I can afford to pay for a private voice teacher in NYC along with NYU’s tuition. don’t most new york city voice teachers charge like 150 dollars an hour?

You can take voice in Strasberg, check out their site, it’s done as an elective I think. Some voice teachers are about $125 an hour. Kate Pazakis offers them for $80 am hour with a student discount it’s either $60 or $70

I can take private voice as an elective at Strasberg?

CLAY,
You can take private voice lessons if you are in ANY studio…it is a two credit elective, no different than at CAP except that the voice teachers are not the same ones as at CAP. They do not cost extra on top of tuition.

Further, Strasberg is one of the studios that has some singing and some dance. They even put on musicals in the studio (my D was in a musical at Strasberg in her sophomore year in fact that was open to students from other studios that time). You also can be in musicals outside of that studio at Tisch (but not the CAP only ones). There are a lot of MT students in Strasberg. Also, you can’t petition to get into another studio. But, after the first two years, you can audition to do CAP21 or any other advanced studio for your last two years or even just your fourth year. My D’s boyfriend was in Strasberg and his background is in MT. He did three years in Strasberg and one year in CAP21. He was in the Tisch Industry MT showcase, got an agent, was cast in an Equity Tour that was a musical, and was in the Broadway Rising Stars showcase in NYC last summer. He is MT through and through. He also performs as a singer/songwriter on guitar in the city. Please meet with Strasberg students at the accepted student event and ask many questions. I feel you will get as much MT, likely more, at Tisch/Strasberg than at Muhlenberg as it is a BFA and also as much as Muhlenberg is wonderful, it is a degree in theater with double majoring or minoring in voice or dance and so that is not more MT than Strasberg will be. There are lots of musicals you can be in at Tisch too.

I’m worried about my dance training though. I really want to become a good dancer, but Strasberg only has dance once a week. If I go I plan on supplementing it at other dance centers, but I’m sure any arts training in NYC costs a lot of money.
Also, my friend at Strasberg told me that it is extremely hard to get a private voice teacher through Tisch because it is done through seniority, and there is a really long wait list. So I was thinking that I would find a teacher who could give me a discounted price.
But I’m giving both some SERIOUS consideration.

Student rate at BDC is 10 classes for $150. This could potentially last you a month because I’m sure you won’t have an abundance of free time. If you go to BDC twice a week and to your studio dance class you should be set with 3 classes a week and take the classes at BDC that your studio isn’t offering at the moment and you’ll get a good core of dance training. Also, find one teacher at BDC for each area that you really like in whichever level you may be and continue taking their class weekly so they can help you more as they get to know you and possibly discuss your growth as a dancer. I’ve worked with a few of the BDC teachers at Circle in the Square this summer and they are amazing and truly care.

clay, I think you are asking the right and smart questions to ask. I agree with Susan that Strasberg is a fine studio for an MT not placed in CAP21, but you are right about private voice as an elective being seniority based. I know several freshmen who wanted to take private voice this year who are on the waitlist but didn’t get to do it. Having to pay for voice lessons outside of NYU and in New York is going to be expensive, on top of tuition. I don’t say this to be discouraging: heck, my D is at NYU/Tisch and cannot imagine being anywhere else. But I do think it behooves you to carefully weigh your offers, costs involved, and so on so you make the best decision possible.

I have kind of run into the same issue as Clay. I really want to do MT and I want to become a GOOD dancer as well as improve my voice, BUT I got accepted into Stella Adler. Does anyone have any advice for me, because I also go accepted into Boston Conservatory for MT so I need to choose between Stella Adler and BoCo. I’ve always wanted to go to NYU, ever since I was young, but I always pictured MT. I dont know, I mean I am an Actor then a singer then a dancer, but I would still like to do MT. Any input?? Thanks!

That’s how I feel too.
So does not getting into CAP21 mean that they thought I was a bad singer?

Clay, definitely does not mean that! The fact is, that you were good enough to get in, but they simply cannot place everyone who is good enough to get in…into CAP…not enough room. And this is true of most BFA in MT Programs…they turn away some kids who are just as talented as the ones they took as there is not enough room. That is not true of every applicant but of some. And you did get into Tisch. Many very talented MT kids are in the acting studios at Tisch. I cannot emphasize this enough. For example…my D was in the Mainstage Musical last year, playing one of the leads. While she was in CAP when cast, she was in ETW when the show rehearsed and was performed. Many of the leads in that show were NOT from CAP21. She was in a musical at Strasberg, and has been involved in GAP musicals and also Playwrights Horizons musicals and Tisch Graduate Musical Theater Writing musuicals and many MT actors in these shows (includnig leads) were from all different studios, including CAP but definitely not limited to CAP. She was one of the fifteen selected for the Tisch MT showcase that I recently saw and many in that showcase were not from CAP21 (and they only took 15 musical theater kids from all of Tisch and CAP kids were eligible to audition as well). Also, my D has been in the NYU N’Harmonics for four years, and is musical director. It is very hard to get into this group. It is an award winning group, including last year they were the Northeast Champions and third in the International Championships at Lincoln Center. The singers in this group are excellent. Many have gone onto Broadway. Many are NOT from CAP21 but were placed in other studios when they got into Tisch. They certainly were not placed in other studios because they were “bad singers.”

Yasha is placed in Stella…she got into BOCO…I don’t know Yasha but if she got into BOCO…she ain’t a bad singer! :D

My D had a friend who got into CCM but at Tisch were placed in an acting studio.
Same with friend who got into UMIch for MT…placed into an acting studio at Tisch.

These are just two examples. Both are phenomenal singers who got into many BFA in MT programs, including top ones, but were placed into acting studios at Tisch.

Okay everyone thinks I’m a female, but I am definitely a male (Just to clear that up  My name is Josh. Yasha is just a nickname given to me haha, but thanks for the compliment). ANYWAYS, i really want to go to NYU but my only issue is where i’ll get my dance and voice lessons? Can I take that as an elective? Does Stella Adler allow them as electives? Stella Adler seems more of a strictly acting intensive and I haven’t heard much of anyone else who go into Stella Adler. Ah I don’t know what to think!

hey Josh, did you audition for Boco on Feb 1 in NYC by any chance?

Can anyone here tell me more about Strasberg’s curriculum? And production opportunities? Does Strasberg have its own senior showcase? It would probably be a junior showcase b/c it’s only a 3 year program

Yasha/Josh, my son was placed in Adler but his situation is different from yours in that he applied for straight acting (though he likes MT and is pleased that there are opportunities for any Tisch student to audition for MT shows.)

Soozievt – you advised Clay to talk to somebody from his assigned studio at Accepted Students Day. We will be attending that event tomorrow. Are there be reps from each studio there who are available for the kids to talk to??

I’ve been a quiet reader of CC for quite some time, and I really feel like I should add my opinion here. My son is a freshman at Tisch - extremely happy - and was placed in Strasberg. He loves the intense training he gets there, but you need to be realistic if dance and vocal training are priorities for you. Your days are very full. Classes, studio days, writing assignments, and many hours choosing scenes, researching scenes, and rehearsing them with scene partners. That doesn’t leave much time for subway rides and dance classes at BDC or vocal training. It doesn’t mean you can’t do it! It’s just difficult, and yes expensive. So be very careful as you make this decision… Try to get different opinions from the students if you can visit. NO school is perfect - ask what they DON’T like as well as the many positives. Don’t forget to ask about the social life as well. Living in NYC is wonderful and has so very many opportunities available. But…will you be comfortable in a big city? Will you miss a “campus”? NYU is EXTREMELY liberal. Are you O.K. with that? Same goes for any other school you’re looking at. This is a very personal decision. Listen to everything and everyone, but know it’s your own opinion and feelings that matter most. Good luck to all of you as you make this decision, and just keep an open mind as you go through the process. Listen to your heart and wherever you end up it’s going to be a wonderful journey!!

Yasha/Josh/ NJTheatreMOM,

I had concerns as well about voice lessons for my daughter. She was an Adler student. She loves straight theatre, however, I love her voice and wanted her to continue with her lessons.

It was through a correspondence with Dean Campbell where we noted my daughters previous training and voice type that we got a list of teachers. My daughter was able to research and write to each one to find someone that she was comfortable with and the price was far below NYC prices. (My daughter went that route Freshman year.)

It was the best thing that could have happened to my daughter. She built a great relationship with her teacher who became a mentor. (She even let my daughter perform with her.) She even wrote recommendations and post graduation, my daughter is still going to voice lessons with the same teacher.

I should note that all the recommended voice teachers were NYU faculty.

I can only speak of how it was organized the year we went to this event. There was first a big Tisch welcoming event for parents and kids in Skirball and it was about Tisch overall with the Dean and other major faculty presentations. Then, the kids all went to sessions for their area of Tisch and so all Tisch Drama students went to a session on that. I can’t recall if that session broke up into studios or not after that (I think it may have but remember just the students were in this part) but many students from each studio were present for questions. There was a reception following all this for parents and students where many Tisch faculty and students were available for questions and so I recall we spoke to a CAP21 student. Now, I don’t think necessarily that faculty from each studio were present as this was a Tisch event and the faculty in most of the studios are not Tisch faculty, but rather studio faculty (though ETW, for example, is a Tisch studio with Tisch faculty). BUT…they had students from all the studios there and they are very helpful in answering questions. There are Tisch faculty there who can answer quetions as well but may not be from the studio itself but can answer questions. Really shoot to meet students from your studio and that really helps. They will be available at the event and in the reception milling around and have tags on.

I agree with happy2be…there is not a lot of free time to go all over the city and take additional classes and it also costs money.

As far as private voice…it is available at no extra charge for acting studio students as an elective though there may be a waiting list and not all can be accommodated I have heard.

My D started out in CAP and is a MT student for sure and did that studio for five semesters and so she had the private voice teacher through CAP. When she switched to ETW, she wanted to continue with private voice since she is a MT actor primarily. She could have switched to a new voice teacher and gotten the elective voice credits, but she wanted to stay with her CAP voice teacher (the ones contracted through CAP and often teach at their own private studios in the city) and did not want to change voice teachers. We could have made her change voice teachers so that it was included in tuition because the CAP voice teacher is not an option if you are in a different studio other than CAP. It so happens that she received a few extra scholarships this year that we did not know about or were not expected and we had planned without knowing about these. We allowed her to keep the money from one of the scholarships and to use it to pay to continue with her CAP voice teacher that way. It costs $60/lesson.
