If I want to study abroad but also do pre-med, is that feasible and still be able to graduate in four years? I would need to take the language of whatever country I travel to (preferably two years), do my pre-med courses, and complete my major classes (Im a psych major). I feel like that is SO much to complete, plus being abroad will push me back even more. But I DEFINITELY want to study abroad.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Not all countries require fluency in the language you’ll be speaking (in many cases, classes are actually taught in English especially if you choose to do something like the IES programs). You’ll definitely be able to graduate on time, it just may or may not delay your medical school application by a year, depending on how well you plan things out.

I did a semester in London and could not be happier with my decision to do so. It’s definitely an opportunity you really have only one chance to be 20 years old and living in a foreign country…I’d implore you not to miss out on it.

I had always planned to take additional time to pursue other interests after college, but I could have feasibly applied to medical school the end of my junior year if I really wanted to. Just make sure to take Gen Chemistry/Physics/Organic Chemistry/Biology before the end of your sophomore year because these can’t be taken internationally. So, it’s definitely doable and probably would only add to both your medical school application and you general satisfaction with your undergrad experience.

It really depends on your college requirements. D’s school has a lot of divisional requirements, in addition to courses required to apply to med schools. She was able to do a semester abroad, but had to take 2 summer courses to get in classes that are only offered 2nd semester, when she was away.

It’s possible. It requires a lot of planning though. I had to take two classes during the summer and overload the last two semesters, which pretty much involved sacrificing a lot of my social life. I’m a math major and premed, and I’ll be studying abroad in Ecuador.
