Study Abroad apps

Okay, this one is for current Dmouth students...It's kind of specific, so I don't know if anyone will be able to help me. I really, really want to do the Classics study abroad in either Italy or Greece (<a href="http://www.dartmouth.edu/%7Eocp/fsp/classics2.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.dartmouth.edu/~ocp/fsp/classics2.html</a> and <a href="http://www.dartmouth.edu/%7Eocp/fsp/classics.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.dartmouth.edu/~ocp/fsp/classics.html</a>). The problem is Italy is only offerred in fall of 2005 or 2007, and Greece is only offerred in spring of 2005 or 2007. I'm an '08, and so the only possible time I could do the Italy one would be fall of my sophomore year. That means I would have to start cramming the pre-requisites NOW, and send in an app...but I've heard that classics is somewhat competetive to get into, and that you're supposed to put in your application up to two years before you actually want to go. The Greece one I could possibly due spring of 2007, my junior spring...But I kind of wanted to do Italy more. Is it possible to do it by sophomore fall?

Hi Kelsey,

Not a student but maybe I can give you some insight since D was planning the same thing (and at this moment is still interested in becoming a classics major) but she is looking to go to Greece but will have to wait until Spring 07 (she too is an 08) and is trying to juggle all of her Pre-med stuff.

As you know the pre-requisites for Italy are as follows:

<a href="http://www.dartmouth.edu/%7Eocp/fsp/classics2.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.dartmouth.edu/%7Eocp/fsp/classics2.html</a></p>

A grade of B- or better in two of the following:

Greek and Roman Studies 17 (Roman History) Course is given this winter

Greek and Roman Studies 18 (Roman Imperial History) or

Greek and Roman Studies 24 (Etruscan and Early Roman Archaeology)

or Greek and Roman Studies 25 (Imperial Archaeology) - Which is given Spring 05

Italian 1, or its equivalent.

Preference will be given to applicants who have taken both Greek and Roman Studies 17 or 18 and Greek and Roman Studies 24 ( or 25, or 26), that is, one ancient history and one archeology course.

If you are not totally committed to your winter/spring schedules, you have time to make the change and get the 2 classes in (or excerise your option of adding a 4th class these 2 terms-ouch). Since J. Rutter is the Faculty contact, I would recommend sending him/her a blitz and letting her know of interest.

We, (your parents) just received a bunch of stuff from the Dean of first year students and in the package it states that the deadline for most off campus programs is Feb 1. You would have to be in good standing (which you are) plan to complete the pre-requisite courses, and obtain permission from your parents. Also ask them for the letter.

All the best

S

Thank you!!! That was so helpful. I think I could frop my medieval France class in favor of Roman Studies 17...Do you know if upperclassmen get preference for study abroad programs? I'll also make sure to bitz J. Rutter.

The Max enrollment for Italy and Greece is 15 students. I personally think that the preference comes with the application, courses and meeting the deadlines. Blitzing Rutter is a good idea because at least you are making a connection, Jeremy Rutter is also the chair of the classics dept, do what he says will go.

The seniors will not be in the picture because of the residency requirement, so it will just be 07's and 08's vying for a spot. If you are back on monday, use the time to make your schedule change and pick up the form (or if you can get it electronically down load it). While you are still home, Try e-mailing the Off-campus program office @

off.campus.programs@dartmouth.edu

And maybe they cna send you the forms.

Daughter took CLST 14 with Christensen in order to prepare for Greece (She said he is very nice, interesting discussions, but kills you with work 150-200 pages a night, quiz in every class, papers, midterm & final, avoid at all cost). While it was a mixed group, she there were no upperclassmen who had studied abroad.

I hope you get it.

hey i applied to the classics fsp in rome for next fall (i am an 08). you still have time to fit in the 2 prereqs, but i was told that some people have to be turned down on account of the limited number of spaces, so be sure to turn the app in as soon as you can. also keep in mind that you need 2 professor recs. blitz roger ulrich to express interest or get more info, he does the rome fsp.

also, you might find this interesting--a detailed account of the 2003 trip

Hey, thanks guys. Ben, do the recs have to be from classics profs? Or any profs?

any profs are fine

ok good, thanks.
