Study abroad even if you go to Community College first?

Looking to hear from someone that has went to a Community College for either 1 or 2 years and then ended up studying abroad wherever they ended up transferring too. I am wondering if this can be done.

You raise a great question. The short answer is YES, this is possible. You can work with the study abroad office at the university where you are going to transfer. You will be likely taking upper level courses abroad (because most of your general ed requirements will be met at the CC) and the location you study may depend on what classes are available. i.e. Engineering is a tough major to find courses and you may only be able to choose from a few locations like London, Australia or Jordan.

If you decide to study abroad while at the Community College, I would advise you to make sure to cover the following bases when finding a study abroad program:

 • Talk to the study abroad office at the 4 year institution that you plan on attending
 • Talk with the study abroad office at the CC or an academic advisor familiar with study abroad
 • check with the 4 year school to see if they will accept credits from the institution where you will be taking classes abroad.
• If your CC has a matriculation agreement with the 4 year college, I would assume this would make things easier (abroad classes transfer to CC, CC classes accepted by 4 year school).
• Be sure you are taking classes at an accredited institution while abroad. This is a requirement of most 4 year schools. An accreditation by Middlestates or the foreign country ministry of education are the most common.

When you return (either way) you can take the foreign transcript to the registrars office to finalize credit.

I hope this helps!

Thank you helps. Would you recommend me transferring after my 1st year of Community College. I am in the honors program and they want me to stay 2 years, but I fee like I am missing out on too much.

Depending on the university to which you want to transfer, you may be able to (or need to) apply for study abroad prior to knowing whether you’ve been accepted or not. This is especially key if you want to study abroad in your junior year. Some universities will let you go straight from community college into a study abroad program (for instance, San Diego State). Others won’t but you can study abroad in your 2nd semester if you’ve applied in time (for instance, UC Berkeley).
