Anyone know how financial aid works for study abroad?

I plan to study abroad somewhere in Hong Kong. Most of the schools are about $11,000. I get about $6,000 in gift aid. Assuming I can use all that toward study abroad, I would still have to somehow come up with $5,000.

Does anyone know if you could get a boost in finaid if we do study abroad?

I believe you should talk to your financial aid counselor

I’ve heard of cases of people receiving more financial aid because studying abroad would cost more money

Your loans and financial aid will transfer over towards the program costs, and possibly additional loans may be needed. I am aware of students that went abroad solely off of their loans and financial aid, and literally were unable to do a lot of the activities offered due to not having any additional finances. What I HIGHLY recommend if you pursue EAP is applying for the Gilman Scholarship, which is purely for students who are studying abroad. Of the students who applied this qtr, a good amount received some sort of money, anywhere from 1k to 5k, from students at UCR alone, but I believe the max that was given out was 8k.
