DD is scheduled to study abroad in Athens in the fall. With all the civil unrest, this has me a bit on edge. We haven't heard anything from her school so I assume the program is still on. Any thoughts?

Call the school, does not look good in Athens

Are you joking? This is Greece not Syria. It’s only natural that parents worry about their children, but you’re taking it a little too far I think. Greece is facing some hard economic times but that doesn’t make it a dangerous place to be.

I agree with Dionysus58. We went to Athens last year a couple of weeks after the protests then. No problem, people were still gracious and friendly. I did see a couple of holes in a guard shack outside Parliament building but that was about it. Think of it as a way to help them out ;-). Greece is a wonderful place!

I think there is likely to be ongoing disruption to things like airports and rail services. However, you are extremely unlikely to be in physical danger unless you attend a rowdy protest and start joining in with the worst elements (setting fire to things etc). I am put off a holiday there due to the likely inconvenience, not because I am worried about my personal safety.

Thanks for the reassurances. I got an email from DD’s school. They are monitoring the situation closely but don’t believe there will be a problem with the program going forward. The e-mail listed all the things they are doing and suggested that DD register with the State Department in order to get current updates. I’m feeling better about the trip now.
