Hi everyone!
I’m going to be a High School junior this year looking into studying abroad in Japan, and I’m looking to major in Computer Science. There are plenty of universities in japan, but I cannot find any information about their acceptance rates, how they do their acceptance, etc.
Let me lay my grades out:
Freshman:
AP World I - B
Biology - B
English - B+
Geometry - C+
Italian - B
Electives, phys ed, etc - A+
Sophomore (I screwed up):
AP Euro - C
Chemistry - C+
English - B
Algebra 2/Trig - C
Italian - B
Electives, phys ed, etc - A+
Now my question is, If I can manage to get all B+/A junior and senior year (im staying as far away from AP as possible, ruined all my sophomore year grades), what are my chances at getting accepted into an average/above average study abroad program in Japan? Also say I got a 1900-2000 on the SAT which I’m pretty confident I can do.
Are you looking to study abroad for one semester or do your entire undergrad studies there? If you’re thinking of returning to the US to work, many employers would be hesitant to hire you with a Japanese degree compared to your American counterparts. If you just want to immerse yourself in the culture, I’d recommend you go for an American university and study abroad for a semester. Love the username by the way, you’re a true Studio Ghibli fan!
I’m actually looking to stay in Japan permanently. No intentions of coming back to the U.S. to work or live.
And yes, I am fluent in reading and speaking Japanese. Searched in both languages and most colleges don’t report their acceptance rate. I was looking into Nagoya University which did release those stats and I got turned off by “20%”.
Just wondering if anybody here knew how they accept/deny. Do they like to see an overall increase in performance throughout high school like they do in the U.S., or do they like the see high performance throughout all of high school?
Omg i want to study in Japan for Computer Science too! Don’t be turned off by Nagoya’s 20% acceptance rate- that’s mostly for domestic students. you should use the Global 30 program ( http://www.uni.international.mext.go.jp/global30/ ) if you want to go as an international student. There are 13 universities doing this and Nagoya is one of them! Check it out. While I’m not sure if you’d get in, based on your grades, but it wouldn’t hurt to try. You also won’t need to know Japanese initially, because most of the classes are in English (I think).
