Study Abroad Personal Statement

Hey Guys,

First off, new to the forum. Seems like a great resource, so let's get started.

I am a third year Bio/Public Health student (premed) and I'm applying to study abroad this summer. In my personal statement I'm planning on including why studying abroad will help me achieve my goal of becoming a physician and how it will make me a better physician in general.

However, i am concerned that if i mention my past traveling experiences that my chances for the program will be hurt. I was born overseas and have traveled to almost every country in europe and my father lives in asia and i have visited him there multiple times. I am concerned that the committee will not want someone with such extensive traveling experience. I would leave it out, but all of my experiences traveling are actually an important reason why i want to study abroad and keep traveling...

Suggestions? As of now I am taking an in between approach - writing a little about my traveling history, but not too much. If anyone would like to read my PS and critique it, that would be great. I should have it done by tonight. I can PM it to you if that's possible.

Thanks.

Unless this is a programme designed specifically for people from disadvantaged backgrounds, then they may actually see past travelling experience as a bonus, because you are more likely to settle easily and not want to return home early.

What country are you planning on going to, and is the PS for the eyes of your college or the institution where you will study abroad?

This is not specifically for disadvantaged students. It is a trip through my school’s College of Public Health to Manipal, India at Manipal University. The statement is going to be read by my university, not the university i will be studying at. I actually posted this same question on another forum and someone responded saying i shouldn’t talk about the traveling… I’m almost done writing it and i haven’t talked about it too much so i think i should be fine.

Here is the link to the program if you’re interested in seeing it.
