Hi, I'm a rising senior this year in high school in MD and really looking at Pitt and Penn State. Im looking to go into film production (NOT film studies) and I am just not sure which school is the better pick. I want a big school with good surroundings and I am very much a city girl, so Penn State seems boring to me. But I've heard that it is a COLLEGE town.

So basically, it's boiled down to a) which college has the better film program, and b)which environment I like better. (I visit both campuses in a few weeks).

Also, a factor is the study abroad program both schools offer. I want to go to London and really have no interest in any other city. Penn State only allows you to travel based on what program you're in, so for Film, I could only go to Prague (not that Im complaining, but I would much rather be in London). For Pitt, I could go to London and take a British Broadcasting class - I think. Also, it seems as if the living situation is better for Pitt's program.

Bottom line: Based your collective knowledge (I really need advice on this), which do you think has the better Study Abroad program and Film Program.

You are on the Pitt forum, so you will find Pitt fans here. However, you should know that study abroad programs are not limited to what Pitt offers. I do not know the details of how to get a program approved so that it applies to your degree, but you are not strictly limited.

I’m being completely honest here: if you really want to get into Film Production, go to Florida, NYC, or California. Pitt is alright, but it’s nowhere near the level of those schools.

You’re out-of-state to begin with, so I don’t see any major disadvantage to going somewhere else.

But, if it’s between Pitt and PSU, I’d go with Pitt. Movies get shot often here, and the study abroad program seems to be pretty flexible. PSU is just in the middle of nowhere.

I’m assuming the OP is in-state otherwise why would he/she only be considering Pitt and PSU?

My advice to OP would be to look into the Temple Unversity School of Communications and Theater. Its a very hands on program, my neice just transferred there and my husband is a grad. Temple is in Philly, so that satisfies your desire for city life.

Pitt is definitely better in film, mainly because of its collaboration and arrangements with [Pittsburgh Filmmakers](<a href=“Pittsburgh Filmmakers :: Find best hotels”>http://www.pghfilmmakers.org/), which is where you’d do your film production training at Pitt. Pittsburgh has a much more vibrant arts and culture scene than you’d get in State College. It’s just the difference between a major city and a college town. If concentrating on schools in Pennsylvania, as suggested above, Temple may be worth a look as well.

I don’t think either school is really your best choice.

If you want to work in film, the obvious options are Cali and NYC.

However, if you don’t like those options, I suppose Pitt would be better than PSU. With a city environment there are more “Artsy” stuff goin on and probably a bigger pool to network in.

I’m not sure if it REALLY matters where you get your degree for a subject like this, but it’s obvious that Cali and NYC are going to have much better opportunities for internships, networking, jobs, ect.

But, I doubt it matters that much. I know two people that were VERY successful in TV production at a very early age (22-25). One went to RIT and was a MIS major, the other went to PSU and was a Poli Sci major. The former is an on air TV personality and does alot of production work behind the scenes, the other is a produces daytime TV shows in NYC.

You may also just want to look into Art/Film schools. Check out the Pittsburgh Art Institute, I know they have film and production courses, and I’m sure Philly has other similiar schools.

To be honest, I would go with the better film program. There are a lot of study abroad programs that you can take that are not affiliated with either Pitt or Penn State, but you can still transfer credit. My friend goes to Penn State and we met in a study abroad program even though I go to a different school. She was able to get all her classes transferred abroad.
