Study abroad programs?

I'm really interested in volunteering abroad this summer! I figured, I love traveling (I just went to Argentina two weeks ago- amazing!) and I love volunteering and helping others, why not combine them? ;)

I've done a bit of research - well, if you classify a broad google search as research - and I've looked at Global Routes and Rustic Pathways. and while these look great, I'd like this trip to look good on my college apps as well (sue me). The ones I mentioned are a couple thousand a trip, and I don't have that kind of money to spend.

With that said, does anyone know of a kind of prestigious study abroad program for HS students? Preferably not outrageously long, either. Maybe 3 weeks at max. But regardless, I'd just like to make sure that there is some distinction between applicants.. though I'm mainly looking for a great experience :)

Think even the volunteer types of trips cost that kind of money. Earthwatch has some great options, and some are less than others. On occassion American Field Service (AFS) offers competative abroad programs, meaning “free” if you apply and are chosen to go. My nephew actually is in Germany for the entire year on such a scholarship. Look at the Teen Ink website --the online magazine has a really good list of summer options. Have found almost everything my high schoolers have done on that site. Good luck!
