I would really like to study abroad, but I am confused as to how the cost works. I will be attending Rutgers University this fall, and I have been researching study abroad options. It turns out that Rutgers has it's own study abroad program, it does not appear to go through another school or third party program. So, is the tuition for study abroad added on top of Rutgers regular tuition or do i just pay the tuition for the study abroad program that semester. For example, let's say I want to go to Florence Italy for one semester. It costs roughly 10,000 dollars. Rutgers tuition costs (9,000 with no dorm for a year), and (20,000 with dorm for a year). Would I pay the 9,000 plus the 10,000 or just the 10,000?

Most schools apply your regular tuition toward study abroad. Meaning that you shouldn't have to pay for both Rutgers and study abroad. A good school will encourage students to study abroad, rather than punish them! My daughter attends College of Wooster in northern Ohio. She did not do a Wooster-sponsored study abroad program, but petitioned for one in Florence, Italy (this past semester) through Academic Programs International (API). Wooster agreed to let her do it, then paid for her tuition/board costs. Of course, we had to continue paying her Wooster tuition. Good luck!

If you do any of Rutger's study abroad program you ONLY pay the "program costs" specified for each program. Some costs include housing (Florence does not)

Any financial aid that you receive (except work study) can be applied to the cost.
