I am going to be a junior at a university in NYC. I really want to study abroad in London for spring semester. The problem is that spring semester is when most finance firms hold their interviews and we all know how important it is to get an internship junior year.

It's already too late to go abroad fall semester and I'm not sure if my school will allow me to go abroad senior year.

Any suggestions? Does studying in London hurt my chances in getting a good internship (in NYC)?

BTW, mods, sorry if it doesn't fit in this forum very well I just wanted to get max exposure so I posted here and in the Internships section.

there are a lot of issues with hiring a foreign worker, even in an internship position. so... yes, studying abroad in london will probably make your finance intern search much more difficult. Maybe you can have the firm use their london office to interview you, but i doubt that will happen. Also, where are you studying in london and what are you studying? studying economics at oxford looks much better than just spending a semeter abroad that everyone assumes is just to party and inflate your gps.

also it's london.. so it's not like you can really claim cultural learning as the reason you want to study abroad.

Tactically, you can also apply to the full-time positions posted in the fall, and make it clear in your cover letter that you realize the summer recruiting season is later, but you will not be around for that so you'd like to offer them a chance to interview you in the fall instead. It's worth a shot.

It's also possible that you could do your first few rounds of interviews with the various firms with people in London, who then would recommend you for final rounds in NYC and fly you back over here to make a hiring decision with the local team. I'm not saying I'd expect that, just that it's possible.

Uhhh it's really not that difficult. Most well known places have early recruitment in the fall for people going abroad in the spring. It's not like you're the only one who is going abroad. Just make sure you're on top of everything and don't miss the early internship recruitment, and make sure you're keeping in touch with the banks. Even in London, you can still have some phone interviews with the smaller boutiques. Don't fret you'll be fine, especially since you go to Columbia.
