My D was offered generous scholarship as a prize for winning competition to go to one month study abroad this summer. It is not related to her future major. How would it look on her resume?

It would look good

I agree. It will look good. Is she still able to take classes for her major or minor?

@AndreaBouchaud she is just 15 years old. This will be her summer before the junior year.

What would her ‘internship’ be if she doesn’t travel? Will she build bridges? Work in a lab developing drugs to treat cancer? Design a space station? She’s 15.

@twoinaddone she did not get response from two summer programs she applied. If not she will probably take classes at a local community college.

I’d go with the opportunity abroad in a heartbeat. That’s a really unique opportunity. I think it would look good for college applications, but I also don’t think that needs to be the number 1 concern. A single item like that will likely not make or break a college application, and I am guessing that your daughter would much rather spend a month abroad than taking CC classes. I would :)

Does the study abroad still require you to pay, even after the scholarship? The more you have to pay, the less it helps on applications, and the more it looks like a rich kid jaunt.

It would look good on her resume, and I would wager she gets a lot out of it, esp if she’s never lived abroad.
