Study Abroad vs Work

Should I study abroad over the summer in high school or work in a field I’m interested in pursuing?

Both are good options. Without knowing more details, it’s hard to advise. I will say one thing: you have the rest of your life to work. But a chance to study abroad may not be available again.

Like the other posts say, I don’t think you can go wrong with either. You learn so much by working from a professional stand point and it also helps build your resume. Study abroad is also really valuable. You learn a lot about yourself, other cultures, and you can also add it to your transcript/resume. My sister actually did a study abroad program with EF International Language Campuses where she lived in Spain, interned, and got to travel. She loved it and said it was the best of both worlds.

Work abroad in the field that is of interest to you ?

“you have the rest of your life to work. But a chance to study abroad may not be available again”

I agree with this.

To me there are advantages each way. Work experience does help with finding a job after you graduate. Work experience also gives you somewhat of a practical view of the world which can help you get more out of university. I think that I did better in graduate school than as an undergrad partly because I had two years of work experience in between. However, you will have plenty of time to work.

Studying abroad will give you a broader view of the world, and will be a unique opportunity. It will give you a chance to meet people from a different culture and who have a different perspective. I think that given the choice, I would study abroad if I had it to do over again.

One of my daughters did study abroad in high school and loved it. I think that it gave her more confidence before she went off to university. The two high school students from abroad that we hosted here also appeared to gain a great deal from the experience.

OP: What is the field of interest ?

My vote is study abroad. You will be lucky to ever get that much time to spend abroad.
