Study abroad

i’m pretty sure i asked this a few months ago (i can’t find your answers via search :frowning: ), but how do scholarships carry over to a summer or semester study abroad program? im asking cause i just applied for the IHP…thanks!

You can use your university scholarship (don’t know about the engineering part) towards a semester abroad. So, if you have the University 2/3 tuition scholarship, that’s about $6500 per semester (I think).

I don’t know if you can use it over the summer. Maybe they allow you to use one of your 8 semesters for that???

siglio21, barring an authoritative answer from the CC community, direct your question to scholarships@ua.edu and they will be happy to answer your question directly.

I agree. But, I think he also needs to contact the CoE to find out what their policy is on their portion of the scholarship.

My son was scheduled to study abroad. He was led to believe that his “full tuition” and “housing” scholarships would transfer as “full tuition” and “housing” for the program he was registered to attend. We had already paid the non refundable deposit.
Only weeks before he was to leave, we found out that his scholarships did not transfer as implied. We had to decide if we were going to pay the additional 10K ( the amount of tuition abroad minus the UA in-state tuition rate ).

*He was led to believe that his “full tuition” and “housing” scholarships would transfer as “full tuition” and “housing” for the program he was registered to attend. *

Who told him that??? I wonder if when your son asked if his scholarship could be used, the person answering didn’t know that he had housing as well. There must have been some sort of weird miscommunication.

Bama has often said that only the tuition portion can be used. If your child is “in-state” than that’s only about $3700 or so.

We never got any paperwork that said that the housing portion of the scholarship could be used toward study abroad.

We got a letter that said the tuition portion ONLY could be used towards study abroad.

What did your letter say?

Since you are an OOS student, your tuition scholarship can be used to pay study abroad costs up to the amount of a semester’s OOS tuition. Depending on what program you choose, you could end up with some [taxable] spending money for your study abroad. While study abroad options where a student pays the same tuition as they would at UA is a good offer for in-state students and many OOS students, it may be less expensive for you to choose a program with a set cost or a cost based on the hosting university’s tuition rates.

so, seatide, would that amount be approx. 3700 for instate students and approx. 10K for those with an OOS full tuition scholarship?

Yes…but if part of the “full tuition scholarship” is being paid for by Engineering, we don’t know what Engineering’s policy is.

If a student has a UA Scholarship, which is 2/3 tuition from the school and other other 1/3 comes from engineering, then we don’t know if the engineering part can be used towards study abroad.

(I do think that the instate students get a raw deal with the study abroad scholarship issue)

aah … ok. forgot about that!

yeah, then (rough numbers) an OOS student on 2/3 tuition is getting 6600 per semester from the uni. whereas an in state student on full tuition scholarship is getting 3500 per semester.

these are the amounts that could go toward study abroad, correct?

^^^

I think so, but check for sure with the school.

I think the problem that momof3boyz had was that they never got anything in writing, and either the son misunderstood or the the person giving the info didn’t know the correct answer (or may have thought he was only asking about tuition scholarships).

When it comes to kids and money, I don’t trust what they say…LOL…I try to get it in writing. Son is going to Nicaragua over spring break, I looked up the details myself. Kids have a way of not including all costs or overlooking some other odd important fact.

Son has the National Merit Scholarship. I do believe it was a case of miscommunication AND son not asking the right questions. Since the student pays the host study abroad program directly, UA would have cut a check for our son’s scholarship funds (tuition AND housing). Our son would then pay the host program.

Everything happen so fast. He was not accepted/approved for the program until days after the deadline. (An extension was even granted.) His Passport is still in the process of being updated (since his original passport was issued in 2006 - it would expire during his semester abroad). We will loose our program deposit. I guess that is the cost of our son not reading the fine print.

We are chalking this up as a lesson learned. As a parent, my husband and I chose not to get to involved. Our kids have to learn to handle their own business matters. We are here for support.

** where can he/I find out about Spring Break travel opportunities? Since his NM Scholarship has $2000 set aside for Study Abroad, has anyone used these funds for a Spring Break Trip? He is a current 3rd year student with Senior status. His travel opportunities have been limited due to NCAA / Team obligations.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would also like to learn of spring break study abroad opportunities. Since they have ten days off and have to be out of the dorms, it would be great if they could get something fun and educational in there.

Son is only a freshman, so it wouldn’t be this year, but would like to do some planning, putting money aside, for later years.

Here’s what the UA Scholarship website says about the $2,000 study abroad stipend for National Merit Scholars:

That’s vague enough that I’d recommend calling the scholarship office for a ruling. Here’s their number: Local: (205) 348-8201
Toll Free: 1 (800) 933-BAMA (2262)

Here’s what the website says about using the housing portion of the NMF scholarship for study abroad:

Finally, here’s the link to UA’s website about study abroad programs: [Capstone International Academic Program Study Abroad Programs](http://international.ua.edu/programs/newsite/left-navs/programs/)

Note the difference between exchange programs and affiliate programs. The former charges UA tuition; hence a UA scholarship would directly apply to cover part or all of the exchange program tuition. The affiliate programs set their own tuition rates and must be paid directly by the student.

When in doubt, I’ve found it most useful to contact programs directly. Here’s a link to the contact list for UA study abroad programs: [Capstone International Academic Program Staff](http://international.ua.edu/programs/newsite/left-navs/contacts/staff/)

Here’s a link to scholarships/financial aid offered by UA for study abroad: http://international.ua.edu/programs/newsite/left-navs/scholarships/

montegut…

Some/many of the Spring Break opportunities aren’t really Study Abroad. In my son’s case, it’s related to his being pre-med. It’s community service. If it wasn’t to help him with his med school plans, I wouldn’t be spending this much money for just a week…LOL I would have rather spent the money towards a summer or semester deal.

Most of the Study Abroads are over a semester or a summer. For engineers, it can sometimes be easier to do it over the summer.

Look at the Study Abroad website for some faculty-led summer study abroad programs. There are some good ones. [Capstone International Academic Program Faculty-Led Group Programs](http://international.ua.edu/programs/newsite/faculty-led-group-programs/)

*Since the student pays the host study abroad program directly, UA would have cut a check for our son’s scholarship funds (tuition AND housing). Our son would then pay the host program. *

The website states that the housing portion of the NMF scholarship doesn’t do that. I can understand why; Bama can’t really fill that space with another paying kid for half a year. So, the space stays with the NMF kid.

I do think it’s unfair the instate kids don’t get much to use towards study abroad. I think there should be one set amount.

How much was this Study Abroad program that a semester’s tuition (about $3800) plus his $2000 from NMF scholarship wouldn’t cover? That’s $5800 right there.

I’m sorry that you had to lose your deposit…that can be very frustrating! :(

where can he/I find out about Spring Break travel opportunities? Since his NM Scholarship has $2000 set aside for Study Abroad, has anyone used these funds for a Spring Break Trip?

I don’t know if Spring Break opportunities are handled thru Study Abroad…they seem to be more handled thru one’s major because they often aren’t for credit but for experience or community service. Or, they’re related to a class.

mom, great that your son is doing community service during his spring break.

where can one find out about spring break/community service opportunities?

I take it you are not using his study abroad money for this, but funding it out of your pocket.

Not to be too nosy, but have your sons been able to do or are planning to do any study abroad?

Especially curious how the premed/chem eng/CBH is able to fit this in.
