Study Abroad?

I really want to study abroad for at least a semester in college, so one of the things that’s really important to me in a college is their study abroad program. I was looking at on Bryn Mawr’s website earlier at their study abroad information and I didn’t get a good feeling about it. It looks hard to study abroad and I kind of got the vibe that it’s not encouraged.

Is it easy to get into a study abroad program? Have you studied abroad? Did it negatively effect your track to graduate on time? Would you say Bryn Mawr has a decent program?

When my D toured in April the study abroad program was presented as both extensive and flexible. If they didn’t have an established program you could pretty much design and present one and they’d give the green light. While I’d stress that you contact them directly, as a parent touring schools with a D exploring IR and a keen interest in studying abroad, BMC seemed to have excellent resources to do so.

Studying abroad is absolutely encouraged at Bryn Mawr! Many juniors participate and we offer a variety of programs across continents. As Leadscheduler mentioned, Bryn Mawr also welcomes students to design or propose alternate study abroad opportunities.

I’ve had friends go everywhere from Oxford to Ecuador-- even study comedy and stand-up at the Second City in Chicago.

But I will warn you, by the time you’re a junior you might be so in love with Bryn Mawr you won’t want to leave. That was definitely my situation-- I came to college DEFINITELY wanting to go abroad and DEFINITELY wanting to go for a year. Suddenly it was time to apply to programs and I couldn’t imagine giving up any part of my four years to be away from this amazing community. Go figure!

I believe that Bryn Mawr doesn’t have its own study abroad program, but students can enroll in programs sponsored by other colleges and universities. My D (2011 BMC alum) and all of her group of friends studied abroad. D. studied in Moscow at the Moscow Art Theater (program through Connecticut College). Her roommate studied in Argentina; two other friends went to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Two buddies also studied in France–one spent a year at the Sorbonne; can’t remember where the other one studied. Her freshman year roommate went to Italy. IIRC my D had some approvals she had to get from her Dean and/or advisor so that she’s receive credits for her program. I never had the impression from my D that study abroad wasn’t encouraged.
