i'm an international student. when i came here, i did not pass the placement test because i did not know any math vocab, so my counselor putted me on Honors Algebra II. However, I think it's easy for me because i already learned it in my country. So now i have plan to study AP calculus AB on my own. Do you think it is OK? Do you think can I take the exam without taking a class? I talked to my counselor but he said it's not a good idea. Should I do that?
Do you think the college admission will consider about my situation???

Judging by your name, you’re Viet, right? No problem.

To actually show that I know these things/make it convincing: I’m a freshman in Calculus II.

For administration, you’re allowed to take AP exam by yourself.
I’m not sure about moving up once you’ve done it, though. (Credits/GPA)? (I wouldn’t care so much, though) Ask your counselor about that.

Now for the actual part:

Most self studying’s difficulties is choosing the right path for yourself. Since it’s calc, you can probably study the whole thing in a semester. I’m serious; it’s not hard. Don’t worry about what your counselor says. Actually; they have a minimalist approach to everything.
It’s gonna look impressive, but also good if you don’t wanna get behind.
If you are going to do it, I suggest “Art of Problem Solving: Calculus”, since it’s targeted towards good people like you.
I must warn you, though: Calc isn’t the only math. If you’re really interested, then AMC’s/USAMO should be helluva alot better goal for you.
