Study Habits?

Hello! I’m currently a sophomore in high school and although it’s a far journey, I want to know what kind of study techniques may be good to develop or create for college and rest of high school. I know that I should find my own, but I simply want motivation and inspiration from those who have experience. Thank you and have a nice day!

@bopper has a great list pinned to the top of this board with lots of tips. I would check it out—some are college specific but most will apply to high school as well.

Definitely check out the above post for some helpful tips. I would advise trying some different studying styles and then evaluating which one is the best for you. From my own experience, after coming to college I began to turn my phone off while studying which has proved to be an extremely effective study habit. Limits distractions and helps me get done work faster. If you start doing this in high school, you’ll be used to being “phone-free” while studying in college!

A couple of book recommendations by the same author, Cal Newport:

  1. How to Become a Straight-A Student: The Unconventional Strategies Real College Students Use to Score High While Studying Less

  2. How to Be a High School Superstar: A Revolutionary Plan to Get into College by Standing Out (Without Burning Out)

The author’s latest work looks good, too:

Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World

Re: Digital Minimalism. Just read it. Very worthwhile, especially the chapters on solitude and leisure.

I also recommend “That crumpled piece of paper was due last week”.

Lots of good practical advice on how to organize your stuff and your time.

This takes practice, btw, so you need to keep working at it. Few people switch to a “new” system successfully overnight.

Is your high school teaching you how to take Cornell notes and how to annotate reading material? Those have been helpful skills for my children.

Im doing a more vocational computer graphic type course and I like to have something easy on in the background such as Always Sunny in Philadelphia
