this mightve been covered before, not quite sure- ok, ive just realized what a pain in the a-s-s evening 'study hall' or 'room study' is. its quite annoying having to be told when to 'study', also we have to leave the door open, signing in, etc. im pretty independent and am capable of completing my schoolwork on time w/o adults pestering me to do so. or am i missing something here?

is this the case at AESD and other schools? cuz frankly, that would really suck. >.<

btw:
WOOHOO 5-more-days!!!! :D:D

Well, at Andover, they have a "pre-study" period, where you're supposed to be in a study area - either your library, a study hall, or your dorm, and then they have the real study period, where you HAVE to be in your room. Or maybe that's Choate. One of those schools. I think it's something like that everywhere.

I'm sorry sabregiel, but as you have not attended a boarding school before, you do not understand the value that study hall will soon have in your life. Once you start at BS, it will not be long before you really appreciate always having a time of day when you ** know for certain ** that you will get work done.

Its not like you are being forced to go to a specific room for study hall, as this is not the case at most boarding schools. Many BS's allow students to trek over to the library, empty classroom, common area, computer lab, art studio, or music practice room for study hall. You can also just stay in your room and no one will bother you really except for an occasional check-in by a prefect.

learn to love study hall when you have it, you will miss it when you no longer have it

At many schools, they also take IM, Facebook and MySpace off of the network during that time- oh the horror!

I'm with bearcats and the others on this. When everyone is studying at the same time, you can get your work done and not worry that you have missed anything because the rest of the time there is always something to do.

oh man- :( study hall...
iono, its only because i dont like how we're forced to have our door open (and study hall is actually kinda noisy) we HAVE to be in our rooms, and we're not allowed to go to the practice rooms (which is a shame, because itd be a perfect time for me to practice piano or something...) or to the library (which would be lovely to study in, they have these little cubicles and everything- its always very nice and quiet)

oh sabrooks- i was wondering, myspace is blocked 24/7 here, and the school has managed to block like 15 different proxy serverse and everything and so theres basically no way around it.

are most bs this 'tech-y smart'? also the school cuts off the internet and phone lines after 11:00- what ifthere was an emergency, or ur international and u just want to call ur mom or something?

the phone cuts off after 1am here. But 911 and security always work

The schools that I'm familiar with are all very "techie smart." They have seen it all by this point! If there was a true emergency, your dorm parents would be contacted and they would come tell you personally. International phone calls would have to take place sometime between 11pm and 6am, or on weekends.

Boarding schools are quite computer-tech savvy. Many BS dormitories have a timer that shuts off the internet at midnight or thereabouts, and the phone line will automatically switch off so the only calls that can be made are to campus security. In addition, in my dorm at Mercersburg, a phone was available for calling all night long in the hallway, and this was used by internationals from Asia and the Middle East who had to call with phone cards very late at night or around 3 AM to reach their parents.

Sorry, what I meant to say was between 6am and 11pm. Different schools have different ules though...

but there are always kids that outsmart the IT department :p at least here

After the decisions are out, if you remind me, I'll PM you a nightmarish story about that and Hotchkiss. It will be funny in retrospect...I hope.

Some kids TRY to outsmart the IT department, but end up crashing the network by trying to install a wireless base station that bypasses the timer. Then nobody likes you.

cell phones: Just by example, SPS says no cell phones are allowed to be used "on the grounds." What about inside rooms? For schools that restrict phone usage, what about cell phones inside the privacy of dorm rooms?

internet: Same as above, but what about air cards that connect direct to the Internet via satellite and through the school's network? Allowed or a trip to the DC?

Some kids paid for satelite internet, and shared it through a wireless gateway in the dorms and it's almost impossible to tracee where the satelite signal ended up at.... there's no way the school can ever block that...i dont do that..but i know how to make a shared wireless network invisible unless the correct network ID name is requested, which most kids would use 18(maximum) random letters and numbers and pass it along to their friends.

oh and another thing- i was in my dorm one night and i called up my mom, but the reception was terrible so i told her id call her outside, but as soon as i touch the door and open it, this blaring alarm goes off, (iswear idk some outside lights starting flashing too) the dorm parents come running out, and im kinda like- waaaat???

turns out someone forgot to tell me that dorm doors are always alarmed after 10:00. >.<

its funny because im so used to being a perfect rule abiding individual, but im finding that ive been (though inadvertantly) breaking all these rulesrulesrules. ie signing in on weekends, opposite sex room priviledges, etc.

also, ive been told that the windows on all dorms are also alarmed, ie so students cant escape through the window at night. pardon my ignorance, but is this standard practice? 0.o

I dunno if the alarms on windows, etc., are "standard practice" at most schools, but at my d's school, the administration is SERIOUS about the students obeying whatever rules are in place - and the students themselves, for the most part, abide........and yes, there ARE shut-off times for cell phones, internet, lights out, etc., at least at her school...and they are expected to abide by them! Jeesh -- the rules are there for a reason. If you make it to bs, just read/listen to the rules, follow them, and you won't have any problems...

I've never heard of anyone trying to sneak out at night (maybe it's done), but usually most students are so exhausted by their days, they just want to sleep!
