Study Halls

I was just wondering how many schools have a study hall period, how it works, and whether or not it’s mandatory. What do you guys think of having a study hall period?

In my school, everyone is required to have a period of study hall, where you’re basically allowed to do anything as long as you don’t disturb classes and stay in the school grounds, but from what I’ve heard, a mandatory study hall is really rare, and it’s optional in most schools. For our school, one of the reasons a study hall is required is because orchestra and some of the AP sciences have a “study hall lab” once every cycle (we use a block schedule", and the financial literacy course required to graduate is taken for half a year during study hall any year.

I don’t think I’ve heard anyone complain about the study hall being mandatory since it gives you a stress-free hour built into your day, and if it was optional, most people, including me, probably wouldn’t have taken it since it would look bad, but now we don’t have a choice, so I wanted to know what others thought about Study Halls in their school or the equivalent of it.

My school has block twice a week, and we have a forty minute study hall built in after the second class of the day then. You’re supposed to use the time to do homework or ask for help from teachers but most people mess around on their phones lol
I haven’t heard anyone complain about it, most people seem to agree it’s helpful but every day seems excessive in my opinion. one of the schools in my area offer study hall as a specific class during a regular class period. If it is required by your school they might list it on your college transcript; my school only allows you to take one science and math class a year and they write that on transcripts

OUr school does not believe in study hall. They will give kids who struggle with math or perhaps ELA a specific study in which they get extra help however beyond that they don’t even mention study hall is a thing. There is a possibility of taking a teacher’s helper type period which may give you some down time to study. My guess is since the students never had it they don’t complain.

Our school encourages study hall. Freshmen through juniors can have 2 study hall periods per year, and seniors can have 3. If you take an AP science, there is a required study hall/lab period, which isn’t included in the 2 or 3 requirement (so, a senior in AP Chem technically could have 4 study halls). We have an 8 period day.

My junior year, I actually got away with 4 study halls because I took AP Physics and AP Calc BC was discontinued, so I independent studied it. My language class also wasn’t at the HS, so my issue wasn’t a lack of classes or credits, but a lack of classes at the high school

My school doesn’t have study hall classes. Everyone takes 5 or 6 classes and has 1 or 2 frees, which can be used however you want. Usually, I just go back to my room to take a nap, but obviously they can be treated as study halls. We also have required study hours at night, which run from about 8-10:30pm.

@CavsFan2003 Do you go to a boarding school? You mentioned study hours at night, which probably wouldn’t work otherwise.

@h8annah Wow, that’s a lot of study halls! Did you have 4 study halls every day in your junior year, or was it some sort of a block schedule?

@digiflip Okay, so my school has 3 regular days and 2 block days. On the block days, we only have four classes (1/3/5/7 or 2/4/6/8). On the the odd day, I would have one study hall and two on the even. One of my study halls became a lab period on those block days. 2 out of the other 3 days of the week, I had 4 study halls and then the last day, I had 3 and went to my Independent Study.
